The AI background remover works only on humans.
But the crash seems to be a bug.

Does the crash happen with other photos without a human?

I tried it with another image with similar result, PSP 2023 just close down and leave you at the desktop.

It seems your PSP suffers from corruption. To get rid of it, do a start reset (shift key down and click on the PSP icon). Your preferences and customized workspace will be lost. Be sure you save your workspace on your desktop before the reset. All your personal files and folders will be preserved.

I doubt that it suffers from any form of corruption, as everything else works just fine. Anyway, I can do such a reset, but I feel quite sure it will not help...

Only the AI is corrupted but you cannot reset only the AI.
I am sure it will help! :-) :-)

I'm of no help here but I am curious, does it show a progress bar before crashing or does it crash almost instantly after selecting the effect? I ask because the Background and portrait AI modes first create an initial selection around the subject, then they enter Selection Refinement mode. And under File -> Preferences -> General Program Preferences there is a "Performance" section, with a checkbox that disables Hardware Acceleration. This supposedly affects the performance of Refine Selection brush. I wonder if this might be something to check if the reset doesn't help.

It do show the progress bar, when it's finished the program shuts down.

Anyway, this is not important to me. I just wanted to check what the program did if I tried without a person in the picture.

I never use the program this way. If I wanted to change background on any object I just select it and remove the background. Just as fast and simpler, not having to deal with all the faulty selection the so called AI makes.

It did actually help with the crash to do a reset, as it's no longer quit abruptly. Now if the AI just could be more precise... 😎
