How to swap colors in an image.

Post by jparnold »

Hello

I know how to use the color changer tool to change the color of part of an image but how do you swap color of two parts of an image as the color changer pick tool only allow the user to select a color from the palette.

An example would be an image of traffic lights (yeh I now its a bad example but the best I can think of) where I wanted the green light to be the same color as the red light and the red light to be the same color as the green light. The palette does not contain a similar red and green (example) to choose from.

Is this possible and if so what is the method.
Thanks.

Here is part of the image where I want to swap the yellow parts with the dark blue parts -

Here you go:
1) Duplicate the layer.
2) On the duplicated layer, paint with the Color Replacer Tool (not the Color Changer Tool).
3) Change the duplicated layer blend mode to Hue.

Thanks Jean-Luc.
I was starting to wonder if the answer was to use a duplicate layer. I know little about them but will learn and follow your instructions. Also I had forgotten about the Color Replacer Tool.

Hello Jean
i cannot work out how to do what you achieved which is partly due to the fact that the original dark blue area is actually made up of various shades of the dark blue.
Also the area to the far left made up with stripes has been lost.
Maybe its too difficult to do?

Could you post a bigger image?
Do you need to retain the stripes on the left?

I prefer that the stripes be retained.
Unfortunately I don't have a larger image.
It is part of the attached 1024 x 1024 image (upper and right middle areas).

I think it will be easier to start from scratch and recreate the logo.
I did an image Google search and found this:

It is a webp file that I converted to PNG:

Thanks
Yes I will go with that. And maybe cut and paste the stripes using layers.

If I were you I would not cut and paste the stripes! You're just going to run into further problems of getting the stripes completely cut without having some anomalies. Why don't you simply sample a color from the middle of the stripes and create your own as you are creating - from scratch as suggested by Jean-Luc - a new image?

I just had a thought which seems to work. Considering the size of the part of the image is so small I decided to RESIZE the entire image (from 1024 x 1024 to 4096 x 4096). I can now select all the yellow areas including the stripes. After I finish I might resize back to 1024 x 1024 although where I will use the image the image can be 4096 x 4096.

Any thoughts on that method?
