I just tried moving the mouse slower but the only "jerkiness" or "clunkiness" was due to me jerking the mouse in an effort to go slow; if that makes sense.

No, Ultimate would have nothing to do with it as Ultimate only refers to the extras that are given with the purchase. The PSP software itself is identical.

@jando - There is a "Show overlay" checkbox on the tool options palette for the clone brush. Does speed improve if you turn that off? I don't have any real hope that it will, but it's the first thing that pops into my mind as something that was added that may or may not slow-down cloning specifically.

Modify the Step value: you have 1 and Kathy 10.

That would just go to prove their point. They made sure their settings were the same between both programs. And PSP8 at a step of 1 worked smoothly, while PSP 2023 with a step of 1 (and all of their brush speed improvements) not so much.

Ok, but with step=1 it should be SMOOTHER than with step=10.
With Step=100 basically meaning "paint the tool when you move 100% of "size" distance away from last point".

I did a test with bigger step values: https://imgur.com/a/KtoVu1b

1st try I used step=100 which should space tool marks equal distance (100% of tool size). And it behaves as expected.

2nd try I used step=99. And my expectation was for it to look and behave almost identically as for step=100 but it does not.
It paints two marks (at the right places) but only when I move 198% away. As if there was some weird rounding error when step is < 100.

I should probably mention that this isn't isolated to only cloning, it's the same for brush, eraser etc... across the board where "step" setting is involved.

Try changing the step setting in clone to 1 instead of 10.

There's nothing you can do. All the tools are sluggish since the 20XX versions. My computer speed has maybe tripled since I bought the first 20xx version, now I'm using 2021 with SSD drive, double the memory (and speed) faster GPU. But the speed of almost every tool is either barely the same or slower than my older computer and older software.

Using PSP has become annoying, it used to be fun trying stuff, now everything just takes so long that I end up waiting for the simplest stuff. Create new layer... click the button... wait for the dialog to appear... press enter/click ok... wait... now the layer appears in the layers palette. There isn't a "new layer" shortcut key by default, easy to add, but just use something every other sw uses.

Pasting into new layer randomly changes the "mode" from scale to something else randomly. When pulling the handle I expect it to be scale always if I don't change it, or press the modifier key.

I think this is almost the same message I wrote couple of years ago, and nothing has changed. Why anyone would buy/upgrade this software anymore as there isn't anything worth upgrading is beyond me.

The core seems to be rotten, I feel for the devs that probably need to make a lot of spagetti to make the new stuff work at all. Maybe that is the reason there isn't that much new things every year. Or there are just couple of guys working on PSP.
BTW Humble bundle has Corel stuff on their bundle, in case you want to buy 2023 for 30$ or so.

Background: I have been a PSP user since JASC v. 7 Anniversary Edition. I moved to PSP8, 8.1, 2018, and now PSP2023 several months ago. I have been using PSP2023 daily - at least 40+ hours a week. My colleagues are using PhotoShop, but as a diehard PSP user, I refuse to switch.
Review: Recently when I have to meet Christmas deadlines, I have had to go back to 2018. The reason is that in my work I use the same resources and techniques each day, but it takes 2023 much longer to process just about everything on the same ThinkPad Extreme/Windows 11 machine. I gave up communicating with PSP Support after nothing helped 2023 issues. On the other hand, PSP2018 is quite quick in processing and gets the jobs done in a timely manner. Perhaps this review will help the engineers when building the next versions. I'll wait a few years to upgrade again.

I just picked up PSP 2023 after trialing it briefly quite a few years ago (over 10 i'm guessing).
While it has some very nice features that weren't there back then i'm surprised by some of the filters/fx and their poor quality.
Those instant effects, supposedly powered by AI are the standout.. Truly awful .. Like something made by a "use it once and move on" novelty iphone photo app from 2012
They certainly dont leverage the power of AI from any time since..
I was excited to see the AI add on plugin you could buy but reading a bit about it it seems it may be pretty behind the times too which is a pity as i probably wont make that purchase
(try to persuade me if i'm wrong tho)
It seems corel has a bit of catching up to do in some areas..
