Capture Device Undetected?

Post by derf »

I want to convert my VHS cassettes to DVD but the solution i am attampting now has failed. This is the scenario:

- Connected VCR to PC via scart:

then that via this:

Which then goes to the graphics card (a 7800GTX).

I start up 'VideoStudio 8 SE DVD' and select the wizard. But when i click on the 'capture' tab i get a message saying that no device is installed/connected. Additionally, when i click the options button on this tab, the 'Video and Audio capture property settings' button is greyed-out.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Did you install the WDM capture drivers for your card? You'll also need to select the DirectShow capture driver.

Okay, ive installed those drivers as you mentioned. I am now one step further.

The problem now is that i can only capture blackness. When i start to capture, i get the message: 'No input signal or signal is unlear. Do you still with to capture?'

Any ideas?

Does your VCR also have an S-video-OUT port, as well as the Scart? (I am assuming the Scart takes the place of regular RCA ports/cables.) I ask because I notice that the cable that ultimately goes into your graphics card has an S-video-IN female plug (which would, of course normally connect to the S-video-OUT of the Scart cable you are using). But if you have a direct S-video-OUT on your VCR you could connect directly, and just use the Scart cable to connect audio to the multiple cable that goes into the graphics card (since S-video by itself only carries the video signal and no audio). Anyway, with VHS recording, it has been my experience that trying to connect a substitute form of cable (in this case the Scart) to carry an S-video signal to an S-video port on another device (or vice versa: S-video to a substitute port) seems to work (or rather, not work) the way you describe.

Other things to look out for: make sure the correct source (S-Video / Composite / Tuner) is selected in the Capture Options, and make sure you aren't trying to capture anything containing a Macrovision subsignal -- the WDM driver won't let you do that.

Hi
From the capture screen select ‘Options’
Select ‘ Video and audio capture properties’
Select ‘Source tab’
Select your input source from the drop down box.

Video composite
Video s-video

Which are you using to connect to Vhs?

This is exactly the equipment i have:

The VCR has R/D (red) and L/G (white) connetions. Both of these are unused. It also has Aerial 'In' and 'Out'. Then, it has two scart connections. One is labelled 'Scart Line 2 In' and the other 'Scart line 2 TV'. I am using the latter (dont know if this is right).

Then, i have a cable connected to the grapjocs card. This has 6 female connections and one svid conneciton to go into the grpahics card:

Svid out
Svid in
Y out
P8 out/comp out
PR out
Comp in

Then, i have a scart cable with 3 connections. One is yellow (looks like svid). Another is a red male and the other is a white male.

Does this help?

To simplify, i have three pieces of equipment. Above you can see a description of the VCR, scart cable and graphics card adaptor cable thingy.

Hi
You have two choices
S-video or Composite
Whichever you use you have to use the Red and White cables. These are normally the audio R / L channels.

So if you use S-Video You still have to connect the audio inputs, as Ken said earlier ( S-video by itself only carries the video signal and no audio)

Try the Composite cables:-
These normally consist of two Audio Red / White and one Video / Yellow
The audio cables are normally connected directly to your sound card not the capture card.
The Video (yellow) to the capture card.

From video studio Press F1 for help, search for connecting, capture or…Ulead have provided a description and diagrams.

I had problems connecting my Vcr via the Scart terminal until I purchased a scart adapter that contained a switch that selected IN / OUT. Using that I had no problems.

In the capture screen Options, dont forget to change the capture source.

Thanks. I think the problem resides along the lines of where you first had problems. That is, i think i have the wrong scart cable. It sais on the packaging it is for 'connecting your TV or amplifier to a DVD player or VCR'.
Thus i presume its a cable that send the signals the opposite way to what i want?

You may want to check this page (and the rest of the site, for that matter):

Good luck!

Problem solved:

I bought a Dazzle USB device and a scart cable with composite outputs and a switch for in/out.
