Unable to install X9 - error: X9 already installed

I’m helping an elderly friend with an old pc running Windows 8.1 Her hdd was having problems so I cloned the hdd to a new ssd. All programs work fine except for X9 which crashed when opened. I uninstalled X9 and attempted to reinstall but that failed with an error message that X9 was already installed so it would not install.

I then used a software tool to remove X9, used regedit to remove all references to Corel, and removed all Corel files from the machine. Problem remains. I tried Corel’s remove and repair tool and the problem remains. I installed a trial of PSP 2022 thinking it might clean up X9 remnants. It installed fine but tells me it’s not supported on Windows 8.1 so if anything happens I’m on my own. I uninstalled PSP 2022 and tried again to install X9. Still get the install error

What do I need to do to fix this and get X9 installed back on her machine?

Hello and welcome to the forum.

It sounds like you've done all the right things. Just to be sure did you use the X9 Removal Tool? The tools are version specific. If not, you can find it here.

Also, did you check the task manager to make sure X9 is not running in the background?

Yes, PSPX9 is not running in the background. Also, there is nothing identified as PSP or Corel running.

When I run PSPX2019_Cleanup it says, "PaintShop Pro 2019 Not found and no MSI's are listed.

I've tried running pspx9 install as administrator.

Edited: Just noticed that you said you are trying to install X9 but you ran the cleanup tool PSP2019. They are two different versions.

I checked that site and there is a different PSP XP install file: PSPX9_PF.exe

When I run that program, the installer is unpacked and the popup window says "Initializing the Installation Wizard". Then another popup window appears that says, "Your system has not been modified. To complete installation at another time, please run setup again. I rebooted and tried again. Same error.

I ran the X9 cleanup program PSPX9_Cleanup_v1.0 and then installed PSPX9_PF as an administrator. I made sure Norton was off.

The installer halted with this error:

Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run
as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or
package vendor. Action RegisterDII.OB8A52BD_3026_43A8_94C7_85DC61732F5B,
location: C:\Windows\system32\, command: C:\Windows\system32\regsvr32.exe

It deals with Windows 10; not 8.1 but it might give you an idea of what to do.

Thank you. That didn't work, but I did some more Google work. SFC /scannow did the trick and I was able to successfully install X9.
