Bizarre colur change

I made a few images by copy/pasting text from my text editor (TextPad). After saving as JPG, on re-opening (in either PSP 8 or IrfanView) I'm baffled to see parts of them have gained apparently random colouring!



I'll convert back to grey scale, but keen to know the likely cause. Any ideas please?

Copying from Notepad instead, the issue did not arise, so clearly not a PSP 8 problem. Closer study shows that the TextPad window content is not black & white as I'd assumed. For example a selection is faintly highlighted yellow. But I remain puzzled how those distinct colours are only seen after saving and reopening. There was no hint of any colour when I was editing in PSP 8 before saving.

It is perhaps a JPG compression problem.
Save the original as PNG, and not JPG, and tell us if the problem is still there.

Perhaps your TextPad is copying in more than one format in the clipboard. In PSP there is a missing menu : "Paste Special...", like in Word, where you can choose the pasted format.

I by-passed the issue to get the task accomplished by converting to greyscale.

But then studied it further. My tentative conclusion is that the colours (145 in this example) are present in the TextPad source display. Presumably to smooth the appearance of each text character, especially at small font sizes.



And for good measure - as I'm never sure what happens to images in the course of their internet uploads/downloads- here's an iPhone photo of my screen after zooming in even further:


For my own information, could someone please advise if they see any difference between my embedded image and this direct link, and whether they can both be downloaded for examination in PSP?:

Here are my tests.
The text rendering on the screen is monitored by Windows. There is a setting in Windows to make the text more or less crisp. Search for ClearType in your Windows Parameters.

Thanks, interesting. It seems that Word has effectively done the greyscale conversion mentioned.
