Sudden issues with Sony 4k & HD Codecs

Post by OBB »

So... For years I have been using Sony cameras but lately? Their 4k & HD format seems to be rejected in VS (18 & 19) and I don't know why...

When I open either 18 or 19, I can load the clips (via drag & drop or Import fine) but, for some reason, once they are loaded? The problems begin... They show in the timeline (as they should) but when you try to scrub or edit? It locks up the program... it will run & play from a preview perspective but in audio only... it shows the vid but stays at whatever point you begin play from... Video is frozen & I've tried loading into main track as well as an overlay track... And get the same result...

From there? Even letting the file sizes import overnight with the thinking of they are large (9Gb+ shot in Sony's 4k general format) ... I still find myself at the same conclusion... And even after clips load overnight into proxy? It's the same... And if I tey to use the share function to spit out a finished product? ...It just sits churning at 0% and after about 15-20 mins? ...It just throws up a small window saying "Unreadable Format" ...and then you simply hit ESC or OK & VS tanks off rather than shutting down properly...

Anyone have any insight of this?

I did try converting a few files in Handbrake and then reloading them but the problem persits..

Are the videos using Dolby 5.1 audio? If so, that could be the cause of the problem. For whatever unknown reason, Corel have virtually phased out Dolby. That is certainly the case for Win 7 users, but for Win 10 users like you, I understood they were still supporting dual channel Dolby.

When you converted some in Handbrake, did you still use Dolby 5.1 as one of the parameters?

are you able to provide a short sample of the HD and 4K video
I have used a Sony camera to record to HD, little or no problems in editing those clips, I have to say the clips are relatively short.
I'll check the camera to see if it supports 4K, just have not set that as i do not have 4K tv to play back the files so stick to HD

Properties are
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 50 fps
Frame-based
H.264 High Profile Video: 59998 Kbps, 16:9
48000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
LPCM Audio: 768 Kbps

My pc is on the slow side so do use Smart Proxy to improve timeline playback

You mentioned "Unreadable Format", is that when using the original Sony files?

Hey Lata...

The camera I've been leaning on is the A7R-IV (XAVC-S 4K format)... But I also us an older Nex-7 (AVC-HD format) ... and while I can playback either raw files via WMP or, any other player for fact..The problem doesn't happen until I try to load the file direct or any file after saving direct to a local folder...

VS 18 & 19 will load the file(s) if I wait long enough to let it cement itself into Proxy... And then I can edit, although the video remains stuck at where ever the line was scrubbed at regardless... and then video playback/review is static & then when I try to export in any fashion... I get the error 'File Unreadable'. . .

This one really has me scratching my head..

But another odd issue above that is, I can't even seem to load any of these files direct to FB either... And other than directly going from the camera to YT? As soon as I export the cameras to any specific folder they also fail... Even if I try to dumb them down in handbrake...

And the only way I could seem to do anything was to unload them directly from the camera. The ones I save externally just sat there & churned... And confused as to why.

As an example: these will only go up if I run directly from the camera...

It's just an odd issue at best... 2-3 weeks ago I did some shooting with both camera as well & those all went right into VS without a hitch.

So not sure what the issue actually is... the only thing I did to anything was reformatting both cameras cards as they were full & went on my merry way. About the only thing that I'm wondering is if because some of the files are pretty large, especially from the A7R-IV, one 10 min 4k file was 10.7Gb... But, last night I just set the camera on the deck with a timer & shot some test 1, 2, 3, 5 & 10 min clips to see if was the file sizes maybe playing into it.. and this morning those all go in fine into VS without an issue...

Like I said this one really has me scratching my head...

Ok so this problem still exists…

This past week I even tried uninstalling VS from both machines & also used the clean-up tool as well & then reinstalled. And I’m still in the same boat…

I can drag the clips into either main or an overlay track. But, they seem to take very long until they fully load. And once they do load into VS, as soon as you try doing the simplest form of work SCRUBBING… you can move the timeline to a desired point but as soon as you do this? VS locks up churning and you have to wait for 10-15 mins before the preview pane shows the correct frame you moved to. If you move it again then it does the same thing again…

If I leave the pointer at time 0:00:00, i can add effects to them but the preview just remains static no longer how long I wait. And if I watch what’s going on via task manager the VS process is pegged at the top and never drops, even after waiting for 3 hours…

A few years ago I had a similar issue, again on both the same machines but it was when I X6 and moved to X8 and then also picked up X9 for the main machine… And in the end it seemed to stem from a windows update (and I’m guessing at that). And as soon as the issue arose it just suddenly went back to normal operation a month or so later… but this time around it doesn’t show me an update was installed. And if I check for an update it tells me WIN10 is up to date ….

I also run Corel Painter & Coreldraw X8 suite as well and am having no issues from them… It only seems to be affecting VS X8 & X9.

Can anyone help think of something I haven’t tried yet?

Just a little confused with which version of Video Studio you are using, earlier you mentioned VS 18 or 19
Now you mention X8 or X9, yes X9 may well be VS 19
Using X9 can you view Help About - what is the version number?
Corel did not help when changing the version format after X10 to become a date format, X11 now known as 2018 aka version VS21

Smart Proxy
Can you also check that Smart Proxy files are being created, once created they will show in the Smart Proxy File Folder. ( Settings – Smart Proxy Manager – Smart Proxy File Manager)
A double looking icon will also show on the clips on the timeline and within the library as attached image.

Are you able to upload your recordings to a sharing site, ( one Drive, Google Drive, Drop Box etc.) the guys here can test on their pc's, I suspect my setup may be a little slow to cope with 4K stuff

On my Laptop I have X8 and on my main machine I have X9 (not 18 or 19)

I'd throw up raw example but the files are too large... The smallest file of any of the video files exceeds limitations of 'free' sharing services. Even the smallest file is 6.2Gb and go up thru 20-30Gb...

And yes, I've checked my proxy settings as well... even double checked them with some older jobs to ensure everything is going where they should go... And the new files do show up as intended where they should, including the library (even after program crash).

I can move them, I can recall them from Library and/or Proxy as well... it's just none of them will edit, export, save or share...

Simply record a 5-10 sec clip on your A7R-IV and share it.

Ok... And then where can I share it completely raw... I first tried uploading a raw 15 second clip & then a raw 5 second clip to dropbox and they just tell me is to upgrade to a paid acct... & I don't have a google acct...

But oddly, I can upload them into iMovie & then export but, it comes out in a different format and losses the raw format...

No idea how big your 5 sec RAW clips are but Dropbox states "All files uploaded to Dropbox can’t exceed your storage space quota. There is no file size limit for files uploaded through the desktop or mobile apps, and files uploaded to dropbox.com have a maximum file size of 50 GB."

Apparently A7R IV in video mode can record 4K (3840 x 2160) at [60 to 100 Mb/s] 23.976/25/29.97 frames per second, or Full HD (1920×1080) at 23.976p/24p/25p/29.97p/50p/59.94p/100p/120p [16 to 100 Mb/s]. Hence it's hard to understand how a 5 second clip can be > 50GB.

The "Dropdown Basic "plan is free and allows up to 2GB of storage. I have uploaded/downloaded files up to 250MB without any problems. No need to get a paid plan if you only do simple stuff
