Rotating a video camera 90 degrees so format matches a phone 9:16 aspect ratio

Post by Tesla99 »

Using a Canon camera physically oriented portrait so it is LIKE taking a 9:16 aspect ratio. I want this video displayed on a phone vertically. The Canon video is 1920X1080. I put the VideoStudio project in phone mode, 1080X1920, 9:16 aspect ratio. When I rotate the video it should fit that ratio, but it gives me a smaller picture. My work around is to edit the video all in original state,1920X1080, project 16:9 aspect ratio, laying on it's side -filmed rotated 90 degrees from the canon. Next I share the video, load to Google photos and then rotate it with my Pixel 5a phone and it looks perfect. I have a full screen, no image cut off. Am I missing something? Why can't I do this in VideoStudio Ultimate 2021?

Does anyone have a simpler way? I also lose some resolution going through Google Photos in this technique.

Not sure exactly what aspect you have recorded, seems a little strange to have to rotate and resize the video, as though the ratios are a bit mixed up.

There is an option to manually resize our video clips, to the right of the “Change Project Aspect Ratio” 16:9 / phone icon are the Distort Tools, select the Scale Mode and your video will show having resize handles.
Also right click the preview screen clip for other re-size options

The other option is to place the video on the overlay track, this will also allow us to resize the frame.

Maybe this explains it a little better. Here is the orientation how the video is filmed and edited: https://youtu.be/9MZJIvFO1zA
Then I take that video and load it into google photos, using google photos editor I rotate it 90 degrees to the right and save it. Looking at this video on a phone, it fits perfect for vertical viewing. https://youtu.be/O_bqzyU927s

I hope this explains it better. If I use VideoStudio to rotate right 90 degrees, it does not fill the screen.

If your source was filmed in 16:9 aspect ratio then rotating it by 90 deg will not fill the screen. VS can render as 9:16, but a portrait mode video cannot fill a 16:9 screen.

Note that if you are uploading to YT then you might want to upload your 9:16 aspect ratio clip labelled as a #Shorts, which will display it in a portrait mode, e.g. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/qDJB7NHQgik

Set the project properties to use 1080 x 1920 portrait ratio.
Insert the video to the top track
Right click video timeline clip for Motion, Customise Motion
Rotate Z -90 degrees
Size X to fill frame approx. 200
Right click keyframe 1 for Copy and paste to all
Ok to that returns to timelines

Share – Same as project settings

I just loaded your horizontal video in VS, rotated it by 90 right, rendered and the result is just like what you show in your 2nd youTube clip. A 1080x 1920 video cannot fill a 1920x1080 screen.

Canuck, Trevor, Lata, thanks for taking the time to look at this. If you were to look at my second YouTube link on a phone, it would fill the screen full size (holding phone vertical), nothing cut off. Looking at the metadata on the video there is a parameter that rotates the video 0,90,180,270 for phones, Videostudio doesn't change that parameter, but Google Photo does. (The first video is rotation 0, the second rotation 90.)
This explains the orientation of a phone

Thanks for that info
you asked how Video Studio could rotate your 1920 x 1080 to create a portrait video 1080 x 1920
Did you try the options by canuk and myself

I used Customise Motion as that was the only option I found to create a true Portrait without having black borders, there may be other ways to do this.
I also attached a video converted to portrait 1080 x 1920, have you downloaded that sample.

Now if those options do not work for your video then you will have to provide us with the actual recording and not one uploaded to You Tube

Trevor - I just downloaded your sample video and sent it to my phone, it works, plays portrait, full screen. Next, I have to try your technique and see if I can edit and flip. I want to send the video to the team, and they only use phones, that's why I went through the trouble. I needed the optical zoom of the video camera and couldn't use a phone to take the recordings.

Trevor - Just tried your steps, it worked, this is the most important step "Right click keyframe 1 for Copy and paste to all". Another interesting thing I just found out, the first video I posted on YT in landscape, if you view it on a phone it will play in portrait, full screen, the effect I was looking for.
Thanks again for your time.
