G'Mic

Post by LMC »

I can't get G'Mic to work on PSP 2021. I've followed the instructions, downloaded the 64 bit version (actually there were three versions, so I downloaded them all, and tried them one by one). I'm on Windows 10. I've got other, older, plug-ins up and working no problem, but not G'Mic. Any ideas, or does it just not work with PSP any more?

G-Mic works just fine with PSP21.
You want the x64 file (G'MIC-Qt plug-in for
Photoshop / Affinity Photo / PaintShop Pro /
PhotoLine / XnView (8bf)?

Instructions for installation

A filter plug-in for Adobe® Photoshop®* and other compatible software that interacts with G’MIC-Qt.

Installation

1. Close your host application.
2. Place GmicPlugin.8bf and gmic folder in the folder that your host application searches for filter plug-ins.
3. Restart your host application.
4. The plug-in will now be available as the G'MIC-Qt menu item in the GMIC category.

Seeing this thread prompted me to have a look at G'Mic. I found I had to use the GmicPlugin_x64.zip version, not the ARM one. It worked in both PSP2020 and Affinity Photo 1.10 on Win11.

SECOND EDIT: I guess I just have to play around with it more. I get some effects applied almost immediately after clicking Apply then OK (the latter closes the plugin), but some other stuff doesn't seem to apply to the image at all - at least ones that seem to have to add a layer with an image or something and transparency around it. So it's going to be a matter of learning the plugin better and/or what limitations it has with my system. On another note, I found a filter in Gmic that was a shadow enhance filter and applied it to a landscape image with dark foreground. It had about the same effect as I can get on the same image using the Clarify and Fill Light filter built into PSP. :-)

EDIT: I finally just hit the OK button and the image changed to reflect the filter I had selected. Will try again with another filter and see if it just takes a long time or if I have to hit OK after Apply to make it work. Will report back.
-----
The plugin opens for me and I can see the different changes in the preview window of the plugin. But when I click Apply then PSP shows Executing Plugin and a white progress bar but nothing happens in the progress bar and the image in PSP doesn't change and I've waited for many minutes. What am I missing?

JoeB

I am not sure if this answers your question or not as I have not spent much time using this filter.

The apply button applies your selected filter to the image but you remain in the filter for additional applications or adding other filter effects. Some filters are quick to apply and others not so much.
The OK button applies your filter and exits the filter back to the PSP window.
There are some filters that save a copy of your image rather than applying to the open image. Not sure why...
There are some filters that state multiple layers needed for this filter. Not sure why as I have not used this functionality...

@ConalO: Appreciate the additional info. I will continue to play around with the different filters and try to learn the various quirks. And in my original post I was referring to the white progress bar that shows on the bottom of the PSP window when the filter is invoked, and I was wrong to be looking at that. I have since noticed that the filter itself has a sort of progress bar which does a very quick swipe and I had not really noticed that before.

While I'm here, do you know if there is a way to be able to switch the preview from showing the filter effect and showing the original? Some plugins, for example, will switch between the effect and the original if you click on the preview image, others have a button for Original and Preview, etc.

In any event, the info you provided is interesting and helpful!

JoeB there's a preview box; just uncheck it to toggle back and forth.

I would go to the official site and file a complaint.

But also check permissions on the folders and sub-folders to see if they can be written to by non-administrators. I don't normally put stuff there as normal users (the permission level PSP runs under) aren't allowed to write to it randomly.
