Paintshop Pro Ult 2022 - full support for webp

Post by aliasmask »

One of the main reasons I bought PSP 2022 is so I can edit webp files and it turns out the webp files generated by a 3D rendering program are not readable by PSP 2022. I can open the files in Gimp and Paint.net, but not PSP 2022.

Will there be a fix with in the next 30 days? Is there another solution that can be applied before then like a 3rd party solution, or unofficial hotfix. I would prefer not to go through the return process.

Here's an example of a file it can't read. ((Had to zip because .webp extension is not supported by forum))

wepb file is supported by PSP.
But your file is not compatible.
A workaround for opening your file:
- in Windows Explorer, right-click on the file and select Open with... Paint (yes, Windows Paint!)
- in Windows Paint, select File/Save as PNG

That means PSP doesn't support every version of webp. There is an official program from Google to convert to PNG, can make a script to make that more seamless. But otherwise, no I don't think PSP is going to make a change or update any time soon.

Do you know where that program can be downloaded? I searched for Google Convert WebP to PNG and didn't see anything from Google.

You need to search for libwebp. Google provides it for developers.

The program itself is included in the binaries called dwebp. It can decode to PNG format via commandline.

I really didn't want to convert all my webp files to png so I can use them in PSP. I have been doing this when needed already with my old version of PSP, but the whole point of buying the newer version, which says it supports .webp, was use webp files directly. As I understand it, PSP doesn't like the alpha channel of the webp file, so if your file has it, it won't read it. This seems like something super basic that should be supported. Photoshop has a plug-in to fully support webp and I was hoping the same was true for PSP.

I don't know if it's the alpha channel specifically. Or just that alpha was added after the initial webp format was created 11 years ago and PSP only supports one of the older versions of the spec. So if you bought PSP just for webp, yeah I would return it if none of the other features off you no practical use. The best I can offer you is a script that makes use of the libwebp utilities. In my mind it would work like this, you run it, an "Open file" dialog pops up. You find your file, it converts the file to PNG and opens the PNG. You make edits and then use the save script, the save script saves the PNG and then automatically uses the commandline to convert it to webp. So you don't personally do the conversion, you run two scripts that do the conversion (import and export) for you.
