Insta360 One X2 Resolution

Post by VocalMike »

Hello,

I have an Insta360 One X2 and I'd like to edit the 360 videos in VS 2022. The Insta360 is a 5K resolution but I can't seem to set this resolution in VS, I went to project settings but 5K is not an option and custom doesn't allow it either. Am I doing something wrong or does VS not support files with that high a resolution?

Thanks!

Mike

5K not yet available in VS, at the moment you need to use the builtin software of the camera

I have to confess I know nothing about editing 360 video

I was able to set Project Properties to Mpeg4 – Online – one of the 360 templates, then Edit to set resolution to :-
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 4096 x 2304, 25 fps
Frame-based
H.264 High Profile Video: 15000 Kbps, 2:1
44100 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 128 Kbps

Thanks Robert. I had a feeling that was the case. I have a number of clips and want to join some of them together, but the Insta360 software doesn't have that capability it seems.

I don't have an Insta360, but I'm a little surprised that you cannot find a way of joining clips together using the software they provide. As I understand it, there are two types of software available: the Insta360 app for your phone and Insta360 Studio software for a computer. Using the app you can certainly join several clips together to make what they call a "story". From what I could see on YouTube, this is somewhat limited, but you can still join clips, add effects and background audio. Tutorials are included with the app.

The Studio is more sophisticated than the app, and again looking at YouTube, what you appear to be after is clearly possible there. Joining clips to make a larger video is, after all, what editing clips is mostly about... Have a look at this YouTube video which covers your X2 camera.

I now need to apologize since I have found that in fact Insta360 Studio in itself cannot combine several clips in one video. I downloaded the current version of Studio and found out for myself using both some Insta360 clips I had plus a few 360 clips I have from my ancient Samsung 360. But indeed Studio cannot combine them by itself and uses its plug-in for Premiere which few people will be able to use because of Premiere's expense. (I wonder if it works with Premiere Elements?) The Insta360 community indicates, as VocalMike has already said, that you have to use third party editors to achieve this simple outcome if your don't have Premiere. And of course Video Studio doesn't have 5K as yet.

The strange part is that using the phone app, you can in fact combine several clips, though using a phone for editing is not really an easy experience.

EDIT: FWIW I installed a somewhat old version of Adobe Premiere Elements, then reinstalled Insta360 Studio 2022. And I found that it installed the Insta360 plug-in in Elements. So that is another avenue for people who have Elements as well as Studio, though the question of 5K is still there. The current version of Elements is 2022, and I found one review of that which said they had no trouble with 5K video from a recent GoPro. No mention of Insta360 unfortunately, so that question remains open. And of course still no help with Video Studio and 5K...

Insta360 Studio is a work in progress and is limited. Using Studio convert the invs file to an mp4 360 video file. Then import it into Power Director for fine tuning of the 360 or reframing of the video. I do further editing in Power Director as it is better than VS in this regard.

It takes 5120x2880 and 5760x2880 video. PD has always been ahead of VS in this regard. The best VS can do is 4096x2160, but PD can do much more. I generally use 3840x2160, not much of a difference. VS lags PD in 360 video editing. One of the best Insta360 Studio Turorial can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pv_fr0kXhA8
For me the editor is better than the phone. It plays catchup to the phone. However, you cannot compare the power and ease of use of the computer.
To use a new Insta360 One RS you must activate by phone-crazy!
