My question's geared towards when I have to close items. It alters something in the image, so there's a very annoying save item message on EVERY image when I close it. How do I prevent this? Photoshop (my old Photoshop) doesn't do this. I also don't want to accidentally change an image.
What changes do I make so everything will close without any popups if no user-initiated changes are made to the image? I'm using Paint Shop Pro Ultimate 2021.
How do I prevent PSPUlt2021 from altering every image? i.e. close more easily

To close an individual image, hold down shift and click the close button: Shift+[X]
To close several images at once, menu Window/Close all/Close all. (shortcut Atl+W.a.a). Window/Close all (Alt+.a) opens up the dialogue box, where you can select the images you want to delete (all are checked when the dialogue opens) and/or to save checked images first, before Close all.
Normally, PSP doesn't change an image that it opens. You may want to check menu File/Preferences/General program preferences...> Auto action for automatic actions taken on images without warning.
Also, you can 'change'' an image inadvertently. For example just touching it with a little drag on the selection tool will cause PSP to consider it changed.

If you save the image in JPG format before closing it, set the compression rate to 1.

Re: How do I prevent PSPUlt2021 from altering every image? i.e. close more easily
I switched all allowable auto actions to 'never'. I still have the annoying 'save as' prompt if I want to close an image, whether it be one or 100. Photoshop (at least my old CS5 version) does not ask me if I haven't made any changes (such as rotate, etc.) It just closes without a 'save' prompt.
Hmm, I just discovered something. I hand-opened one image via Windows explorer. It closes like I want it to. But open anything opening with a script (even if it's just 'open'), the .jpg will have a * at the end of the jpg title tabs at top (saying that it's considered changed?).
There's another aggravating thing that I was wondering if there's a workaround? If one has a bunch of images open, Photoshop remains on the last viewed image if one alt tabs away to another program and returns. PSP does not. That means one has to trawl up or down the list to get back to the image. This is very annoying if I have a bunch of record labels open.

Hold shift while clicking on the PSP icon. It should just open right back up. Photoshop does a tricky thing where it unregisters the sub-windows when it minimizes. PSP does it the normal way and leaves all of the Windows registered and then the taskbar is what forces you to choose an open image from the available list.
