A couple of additional observations:
  • If VS is opened by selecting a project (*.VSP) rather than via the Start Menu, LUT.profile is not affected regardless of whether the library is viewed or contains an element with a LUT applied. This seems a bit curious to me.
  • Perhaps less surprisingly, if an element in a project has a LUT applied, the LUT will be applied even if the LUT is no longer listed in the library.
Admittedly, those two points might not be terribly useful to Corel, but they very much help me understand why I was having so much trouble identifying and replicating this problem.

To date, I have not had any issues related to my temporary workaround (setting LUT.profile to Read Only), other than needing to remember to switch it back to Read/Write if I need to add or subtract any LUTs from the library. I strive to keep the number of LUTs limited as VS can get very slow to load the library as more LUTs are added because it has to rebuild each of the LUT icons (which suggest the nature of the color shifts) the first time the library is opened in any new session.

Eureka
Brilliant Curtis
Yes I can confirm your process to replicate the disappearing Lut folders

plus 2 observation
1 / regarding the Custom folder, why does that show duplicates of the luts that I add to my own folders, The program does not allow you to create your own Lut effect so why the Custom option
2 / If I have a sample clip selected within the media library, when I access the lut library, the lut is applied to the media library clip? I would not have thought that would happen, luts only being applied to clips on the timeline.

I've noticed this as well. As there's no mechanism to create custom LUTs in VS, I admit I've never paid much attention to this folder. I guess it's just a catch-all for any added LUTs?

This is true of all color adjustments (and Lens Corrections as well) within VS. I find this extremely useful, as it allows me to easily browse through an infinite variety of color adjustment options (and LUTs) without going through the back-and-forth that is typically required when customizing effects applied to elements on the timeline. Often I want to preview what kind of results might be possible with various clips before adding them to the timeline.

Based on my initial testing (following the same steps I posted previously), this now appears to have been resolved with the latest update.

Hi Curtis
Yes I was about to post here, you beat me to it.
Good to know that Corel listened to us even though at first they could not replicate, that is until you came up with the way we open and close VS, then we could replicate the missing folders.
