Which filter is the best to use to fix a problem

Post by jparnold »

During my last trip I noticed that somehow a setting which is used to change the overall RED/BLUE had been changed from 0 (mid way between RED and BLUE - sorry I cannot find it in the manual) to a position on the RED side resulting in some of my video being recorded with too much RED and possibly too little BLUE the RED. I correctly this setting but now I have quite a few clips incorrectly recorded.

Which filter is the best one to use to correct this.

I have included an image of the video cameras screen showing the setting I mean in case it assists in describing what I am talking about. The image shows the setting is mid way between Red and Blue and it was set about 2 bars to the left towards the Red side (panasonic X920M video camera).

Thanks

Some more information. I found in the manual that this setting is part of the Intelligent Auto Plus setting where the colour balance can be manually adjusted and sets (in my case) a 'reddish tone'.
So which filter would be the best to use to reduce 'reddish tone'?
Thanks.

You are with X10?
I will start with the auto white balance. It is pretty good

Thanks. Yes I use X10. I had a look at white balance but apart from the 'presets' (which didn't fix my clips the way I prefer) and I could not find an easy way to use it as the 'dropper' seems only to be for selecting an area of WHITE in the clip and I don't have any.
I will have a look on Youtube for ideas.

Also (as I have found a clip with an almost white part in it) when using 'color correction' (not the the color correction filter which doesn't have an eyedropper) can you then copy and paste attributes to the other clips? I possibly have 30+ clips affected and copy paste attributes will save a lot of time.

Yes, but try it and see, you can always use undo if you don't like the result.

Thanks,

I am now wondering as each scene I videoed probably had a different white balance, that perhaps I should simply use a color 'changer' and apply a small negative RED value and perhaps also a slightly + BLUE value (since my camera would have added more red to every clip and maybe less blue)?
I don't know enough about how white balance (in the camera) works to know if this would work?

Here are some single frames from 3 different video clips (resized from 1920x1080). The first two are from BEFORE I noticed the incorrect setting and changed it back. The last one (take just a few minutes after the second one was with the incorrect setting removed - notice the difference in the sky and rock face and also the 'muddiness' of the first one.

Here are two more (muddy) images requiring correction yet there are NO areas of white for using the white balance eyedropper.

Two problems:
  1. You don't say what the "incorrect setting" was.
  2. We weren't there, so only you know what the "real" colours should be.
That said, I've attached a VSP that you may find helpful.

Another approach would be to film a clip using the "incorrect setting" and a white object in the scene, then colour correct that clip in VS, and finally apply those attributes to the clips of interest.

Thanks for your reply and attachment.
I did say what the 'incorrect setting' was via an image taken of the LCD panel on my camera showing the 'color balance' setting ie "Intelligent Auto Plus setting where the color balance can be manually adjusted and sets (in my case) a 'reddish tone'."
Also I did include two images from different video clips one where the 'color balance' was set on the camera to a 'reddish tone' and one taken minutes later (after I discovered the error and reset the color balance on the camera to 'neutral') showing what the previous one should look like.

I like :D your suggestion of taking a video of a scene with a white object in the scene and with the color balance set to the 'reddish tone' and then check that out in VS although those two images (before and after just mentioned) has an area of near white (bottom of the cliffs) and also another taken looking down the road with a truck has (near) white lines painted on the road.
I have some work to do and appreciate your input.

BTW the VS project file seems to be created using VS2021 and won't open in VS10.

Indeed 'colour-correction_VS2021.VSP' it is a VS2021VSP as indicated in the name.

I assume that you mean VS X10, and not VS10. X10 is much less capable of colour correction than VS2021, but said, I've attached a VS X10 VSP that you may find helpful.
