Relink to new location

Post by ocbroadband »

Hi,

So, I know the 'long' way around moving files from one drive to another or moving the structure and re running the relink process. I'm curious if there's an easier way to do this vs. renaming the folder on the existing location that triggers the process so I can point it at the new location/drive. If there isn't, it would be nice to have some option to perform a 'update' of the source location even if its valid. My use case is I was moving from a driver that is mechanical, to an SSD for my working location.

Thoughts?

Welcome to the forum.

Are you aware of SmartPackage? Go to File and press the SmartPackage key. That will save not only the vsp project file, but all associated video clips, audio and image files associated with the project. You can then open that on your new SSD. Look up the User Guide for further information.

Oh, it implodes everything into a single file? I'm exploring this. I guess my question would be, does it store the path as relative to the file? Or how does that work? Example, what if I create this file, all my files are on drive E, and then I bring to a new computer, and I only have drive C. How does it resolve this?

No, when saving a project by using Smart Package, it puts all required source files and a new VSP into a new folder. The original source files remain where they were in the file system.

Packaging a video project as a Smart Package is useful if you want to back up your work or transfer your files for sharing or for editing in a laptop or another computer.

You can also package your project as a zipped folder or prepare them for online storage using WinZip file compression technology that is integrated into the Smart Package feature.

Ok, so I did a test and concluded the folllowing...

1) It only includes the files in the timeline, not the library files. This was more what I was looking for as well in the case of a project that is only partially completed and I need the library to match so I can continue wherer I left off.
2) It re-aligns the file path to the 'relative' location of the .vsp file in the archive file(zip).

This seems like its good forr 'post' completion of a project vs. migrating them to a new drive mid-stream. My method of moving everything appears to be the easier solution for my usecase.

Appreciate the info!
