Erase to the Foreground color

Post by eja »

Is there a way to erase parts of an image using the background eraser or the eraser tool and have the image default to the foreground color instead of transparency?

Thanks

Erase and go to foreground color? No. Erase and go to background color, yes. First the layer needs to be a background layer (no transparency supported). And then you need to turn off automatic layer promotion in the General Preferences. This will prevent the background layer from being promoted to a regular raster layer when you use the eraser tool. Next just take your current foreground color and make it the background color. Finally, erase.

Another option, which is probably easier.

1) Promote Background to a Raster Layer
2) Add another layer and fill it with your foreground color
3) Move it below your image layer
4) Use the eraser tool.

You can also use the Brush Tool and paint with the color of your choice.

I tried the first of the 2 methods you mentioned. The first one did not work. Not sure why. I made the change in the General Prefs. I've included a picture of the change. I then used the eraser tool to paint on the image, but it did not erase anything.

The second method I have used a lot and it works well. I was attempting something new that I saw Zak Arias do in Photoshop erasing to the foreground color.

Thanks for the help

Weird, wonder when that stopped working. Or am I thinking of a different program...I don't know I never have a need to do this. It still works for selections though. As Jean-Luc mentions painting with the paint brush will get you essentially the same thing as erasing with the regular eraser tool. And you can do it non-destructively by using a blank layer to paint on. For the background eraser the closest painting tool I can think of is the Color Replacer where you literally sample the color you want to replace as the background color, and the color you want to replace it with as the foreground color. But that's limited to a single color and doesn't adapt as you paint. And Change to target keeps as much of the texture as possible, focusing mostly on the colors only. Same with Color Changer paint bucket tool.

Do you have a video of this Zak Arias person doing this and the reason for it?
