what am I doing wrong?
I'm just trying things out. I'm using the crayon and pencil tool. I have a pattern I want to use and the tool will not work. It keeps wanting to color my image with solid colored paint either purple or black ---I don't want that now. I can't get the tool to paint with the pattern I picked out. Why cant I get this to work? Using Paintshop Pro 2021 on windows 10 home.

Use the paintbrush instead.

To backup what kathy_9 said, the pencil and crayon tools are Art Media tools, meant to simulate drawing with real physical media. They require a specific type of layer called an Art Media Layer and only draw in solid colors.
If you want to draw with a pattern or gradient you need to use the paintbrush tool.
