I've had trouble opening 7.3 DVPs in 8. When you preview in fullscreen and then try to go back to windowed preview, the fullscreen overlay hangs and you can't even CTRL-ALT-DEL.
This has happened on 2 different computers. One with an INTEL graphics chipset and one with an ATI All-In-Wonder 9600 chipset. The two systems are different enough that have "concluded" that the trouble is caused by opening a 7.3 DVP in 8.
Are the final projects going to be compatible between versions?
Compatability between MSP7.3 and MSP8 DVPs?

MSP7 DVP importation is still "under construction", so problems are to be expected. I wouldn't even count on DVP's created in the public beta being compatable with the release build, so edit important stuff with 7 and play with it in 8 as Ulead advised.
Just to give you an idea of how fast things are moving; the public beta is build 13 and we're FAR beyond that in the private beta.

As I've said elsewhere, there is no guarantee of inter-version compatibility. If you want to know why, just compare the titlers in vv 6, 7 and 8. They are all VERY different in many ways and the code written to the dvp is equally different. Those of you who did 6>7 will remember the time it took to re-render a 6 title in 7, often hours for a simple one. Ensuring compatibility between versions must mean compromises are being made and these could lame the great new things.
My advice: finish all projects, started in 7.n, in 7.n; after the release version is installed, start new projects in 8. In the meanwhile, test 8.0 public beta to your heart's content. And remember 7.n and 8.0 can co-exist, so there should be no problem.

Devil, re my recent queries (Oct-19-05), I did just found this (Mar-05) thread on DVP compatibility in the March Beta's. You noted then that v7 DVP compatibility was "under construction". Now that v8 is released and the problem remains, would you now characterize it as "under construction" or "no hope" with the requirement to run v7 as well for v7 project maintenance? <respectful smile>. Many thanks.
Depends what you mean by compatibility. If you expect a full v.7 or earlier project with titles and many effects to be 500% compatible with MSP8, then the answer is definitely no hope. If you expect compatibility with files, layout and no effects, then it is already there. If you want something between the two, well maybe

Thanks, Devil. Ok. Then for me, at least, since I can't imagine producing a project without a good number of video or audio effects, I guess the answer is a flat "not compatible".
Re MP3 imports: I guess that remains a nag since, even with a new v8 DVP, I still have some MP3 import problems with sound glitches whereas there were none with v7.
Q: That said, do you see a problem starting with an existing v7 DVP, saving it as v8, then fixing all the problems, one by one? That is, would this method carry forward hidden problems that would not be able to be resolved by additional editing or does saving as v8 fix the format at least for further work? I ask because I have a 60 minute project with perhaps 30-50 clips that would be a royal pain to redo from scratch but I want to use the advanced features of v8 to finish it.
Thanks for your time and patience.

No problem doing as you suggest. The major rework would be titles (100%). Simple transitions, such as cross-fading, may come through OK but some complex effects may need rework. Once you have it right and saved as a v. 8 DVP, you'll be OK for any further work.
