PSP locks files and folders after all files are closed

Post by SJS »

Paintshop Pro has a bad habit of not properly "releasing" a file after it has been closed. This prevents renaming or moving files using File Explorer.

It is necessary to close PSP in order to rename a file that I have been editing, although I have no files still open in PSP. Closing PSP releases the file and lets me rename it.

This has been a problem for me for several versions of PSP, but I don't recall if I have reported this before now.

Is this a known problem?

FWIW I have just opened a couple of jpegs in PSP 2022. I left them for a little while, then closed them in PSP which remained open. I then went to File Explorer and renamed one and copied and pasted the other. Both of these functions worked and as I say, PSP remained open.

In other words, I cannot replicate your problem, unless I have misunderstood your workflow. And I can't say I have ever noticed it before with any version of PSP.

I've experienced the "locking" issue also but not just with PSP but also MS Outlook 2019. I usually notice it if I attempt to delete the file and I'm told I can't because it's open in (name of program). When that occurs and I close the program and still have the issue, I use a utility called Unlocker.

Do yose manage mode at all? And if you' do, have you added the folders these images are in to the cataloging side? Or is this only with editing?

You are probably asking SJS but for my workflow, I never use Manage Mode; only Edit.

I have that problem with PSP from time to time. I only work in Edit Mode. If refreshing my folder does not fix it, I right click the file or folder in question and use a free app called LockHunter.
In the dialog box that opens there are options to Unlock, Delete + other combinations.
Usually that sorts it out for me.
I've been using LockHunter on my system for many years. It is a handy app to have.

OK, this is not just me. A PSP bug ... and now I have a faster computer, closing & restarting PSP is more reasonable... Thanks for the suggestion.

The locking issue has often been with renaming the folder containing the edited & closed file. I never use manage, only Edit. I cannot replicate the problem at will either. Since I don't regularly attempt to move or rename files & folders after editing them, it is hard to judge the frequency. But it does seem to happen quite often, when I do try to do this.

I have tested closing every other app and I cant rename or move until PSP is closed.
