Post by lmmd »

Hi... just downloaded and installed the latest update and VS2022 crashes a few seconds after it opens.

Any idea what I can do here?

I would re-install the program.
First use the cleanup tool to remove 2022

I would download a new set of installation files, you will have to either delete or rename the 64bit folder, or choose a different empty destination folder.

Downloading the files again should give you an upto date 2022 version 25.1.0.472
There should be no need to install the service pack

I have just read some of your previous posts that refer to other versions of Video Studio crashes on opening.
Do you think this may be an issue with your PC.
Your profile does not give any details of your computer.
Can you go to Preferences F6 – Performance tab – deselect all options for Hardware Acceleration, does that improve things.

I have always had crashing issues using VS. This is over many years, several versions, and several different PCs (Acer, Dell, HP).

This one was caused by the Update. VS2022 was working up until the Update was installed. It is different from all the other crashes in that it happens a few seconds after VS is opened.

I will try the other suggestions later and post again with the results.

Cleaning tool is not an option. Bad experience a few years back. Could not open any project after that.

If you are experiencing persistent crashes using different versions of Video Studio and different PC’s then that really tells me your set ups are ok, so maybe it’s the type of video files you are using.

The Cleanup tool should not affect opening of VSP project files, however if a project was created with, lets say Video Studio with service pack 3, then you reinstall, then yes you may have an issue until you update to SP3.
Of course projects made with 2022 cannot be opened in earlier versions, and that is unfortunate.

Before you uninstall consider creating Smart Packages your project, that will copy all clips / files used in the project, wrapping them in one folder.

If its any consolation today I completed a clean installation of 2022, I did have multiple programs from X10 to 2022, uninstalled all including all associated plugins, prodad stuff etc.
Cleaned my pc, created a System Image as a backup for C Drive, now installed 2022 from a new download. Things seem to be working ok.

As a test I Just opened a VSP project created in 2016, yes I needed to relink the files but all opened ok.

I had uninstalled and reinstalled several times. Sometimes I would get an error message sraring that there was a problem with installing and to contact support. Other times it would install, but would not open.

Looks like I will need to us the cleaning tool. Last time I used it some years back, I was upgrading to the latest version. After installing, I could not open projects from the previous version. I did not want to go through that again.

This time, all projects were created with VS2022, so I hope I am OK.

Cleaning tool failed.

Installation appeared to go OK, but would not launch.

My guess is that the cleaning tool does not get rid of the Update files.

Contacted support.

After support asked me twice for a screenshot of the error message (there was no error message as mentioned when they were first contacted), I decided at this point it is futile to proceed.

I could not afford to wait any longer, especially if it takes days for support to get back to me.

Even then, there is no guarantee that it would actually work.

I then researched other video editors and settled on Cyberlink Power Director 365. After only a day, I feel pretty comfortable using the program.

Goodbye Video Studio.

An important difference to some is that unlike VS, Cyberlink Power Director 365 is a subscription-based NLE, i.e. no pay, no play. That said, it'd be helpful if after you've used PD for several projects, you let us know how you compare it to VS.
