Was wondering why MP4 video taken with my android Samsung Galaxy Note 9 plays chunky on the timeline, stops often but audio continues. I have proxy file turned on. Using VS 2021 Pro.
Thanks,
Candy

Re: Android phone MP4 plays chunky in edit
It would be useful if you could right click a clip from the phone but in the VS timeline, and copy its Properties here -- or take a screenshot of the Properties box and post it here as an Attachment. That way we'd know exactly what we are dealing with. Is it 4K, for instance, or produced with the HEVC/H.265 codec, either one of which might require Smart Proxy enabled for it to be able to be edited smoothly. Does it have a variable frame rate? VS has difficulty with such video, and often won't even play it...

Many smartphone use variable frame rate which VS has difficulty handling. Suggest using a transcoder, e.g. HandBrake, to convert your files into a standard frame rate which VA can handle.cdoughertycd wrote: Was wondering why MP4 video taken with my android Samsung Galaxy Note 9 plays chunky on the timeline, stops often but audio continues.

Re: Android phone MP4 plays chunky in edit
Thanks for that. Two things strike me. The first is of course that it appears to have been filmed on a phone held in portrait mode (so you get 2160 x 3840 instead of 3840 x 2160). Can we assume you have set VS to take this into account by choosing 9:16. That is set in the drop down menu shown by the red arrow in my attached image. I couldn't get the menu itself to show but just click it and 16:9 is half way down.
The second is that it does indeed appear that the phone uses a variable frame rate (59.34 fps instead of the standard 59.94). So I think -- given VS's problems with variable frame rates -- that the suggestion you use a video converter like Handbrake to produce a new clip with similar properties but the standard frame rate, is a good one.

Re: Android phone MP4 plays chunky in edit
Ken, thanks so much for your reply. Yes, I was able to change it to 9:16. I have NCH Prism Plus video conversion software that listed Android 720P as one type to convert to and that worked. Thanks again Ken and Tletter for your help. This forum is invaluable!

Re: Android phone MP4 plays chunky in edit
One thing you didn't say, though, was whether the conversion(s) took away the chunkiness you complained of...

Hi Ken, yes, the conversion took away the chunkiness.
Thanks again,
