Video doesn't get added to project
I am trying to edit a captured video. I add the video clip to the timeline and only the sound is of the clip is added to the project so this may be obvious but that means when I go to save the video all I get is sound and no video.
I do not know what I did because the first time I edited a video on X9 I had no issue with this. I tried reinstalling it still did that. Then I remembered I had SE 2020 too so I tried editing video with that thinking maybe newer software would help. I am having the same issue with that version as well. Also not sure if this helps but when I go to the videos in sample tabs in both versions and add them to the project they play. However, when you go to background videos in SE 2020 they won't play at all not even in preview. It is just a black screen.

Re: Video doesn't get added to project
Welcome to the forum.
Can you please right click on the video in the timeline, and copy its Properties here or take a screenshot of the Properties box and post it here as an attachment. I suspect that the video may be an mp4 video but filmed using the HEVC/H.265 codec. Video Studio does not come with that codec, and you have to buy it from Microsoft, though it only costs US$1.00... It is called the MS HEVC Extension: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/hevc- ... verviewtab If you do a google search, you should also find a way of downloading it without paying: https://www.howtogeek.com/680690/how-to ... 265-video/
Your video should now play properly, though if it doesn't you may need first to reboot your computer.

Re: Video doesn't get added to project
I added the codec..or at least I thought I did but when I go back to codec pack menu the checkmark isn't there. I also rebooted after. The source clip won't play in Video Studio (before the clip could be previewed but now you can't play the video at all in Studio, just shows the thumbnail and you can hear the audio) but plays fine in Realplayer.

Suggest using a transcoder, e.g. HandBrake, to convert your AVI files to a MP4 format that VS can ingest.Aqua wrote: The source clip won't play in Video Studio ... just shows the thumbnail and you can hear the audio) but plays fine in Realplayer.

+1 ^^
Like the folk say use ffmpeg or another tool to convert to a format you have the codecs for. or install/buy a code pack.

Re: Video doesn't get added to project
I wasn't able to install those so I used VLC player and it converted in real time (meaning if the video was 2 hours long it would take 2 hours to convert it). Okay fine if that's the way it had to be but then it didn't even have all the video once it was done.

Re: Video doesn't get added to project
That's a bit strange! What exactly do you mean when you say "I wasn't able to install those"? Could you find them -- easy enough with a Google search... Or did you have a specific problem when you tried to install them?
I notice that in your Profile you say you are using Windows 8.1. Is that still the case or have you moved up to Win 10 or even 11?

Re: Video doesn't get added to project
Mostly I just couldn't find them. I had looked for handbrake but it said you had to use Kodi to open it. I played around with Kodi. It didn't have anything about Handbrake or converting. It looks like just a way to play videos. I tried another link for FFMpeg but it won't do anything when I click the exe file.
Yes I have Windows 8.1
I was using all links that state they are for 8.1 and lower.

Something not quite right with your video properties
The properties you show above shows approx. 2 hrs 45 minutes with a file size of 153 Gb, that’s big.
That equates to 60 Gb ish per hour.
Uncompressed AVI would use similar figures, just a little strange to have a Microsoft compression at that rate.
DV.avi (Digital Video) excellent quality in its day would be 13Gb per hour, so your video seems quite bloated.
There is a small program called Media Info, can you use that to find the properties of the original video.
Can you confirm that the F:\Drake Takes Over Nick.avi is the original video and not a second generation after being converted.

Re: Video doesn't get added to project
I thought it was rather big too so I definitely questioned it but it's also been a while since I tried to convert a VHS tape so I thought maybe it's normal especially for AVI files (they have always been bigger that I've noticed). Still I don't like that it's that big (wouldn't even fit on my laptop so I had to use my external drive) but I thought if I edited by cutting out the unnecessary scenes it would size down a lot.

Re: Video doesn't get added to project
Thanks for the additional info, I had not understood that your original video was on VHS tape.
You would have to connect the VHS device to the pc through a capture device either internal video card or an external usb device, (video grabber) usually having their own capture software to transfer the footage, of course will do in real time.
Although Video Studio software could be used, I believe limited to DVD Mpeg2 capture. At approx. 4Gb per hour.
So how are you connecting the VHS to the PC?
Your resultant AVI video does appear to be uncompressed AVI. given the file size and data rate of 147Mb/s compared to DV.avi using 25Mb/s
Your better option would be DV.avi, there may be an option for a compression called “Microsoft Video 1” or “DV Video Encoder -- type 1” that is equivalent to DV Avi. at 13 Gb per hour is much more manageable with editing DV.avi easy for Video Studio.
Another option would be to capture using Mpeg2, this would create a file suitable to burn to standard DVD disc.
My choice was to use DV.Avi at 13Gb per hour always seemed to produce the best quality from VHS capture.
Another option to transfer VHS to the pc was to use a DV Camcorder that supported “Throughput”
Basically the camera was used as an Analogue to Digital converter.
Probably not an option for you as you would not only need a camcorder but also a Firewire card installed on the pc.
I guess I am saying start again to capture the VHS making sure you have a better compression choice.
You can always capture a short sample, one minute would do, then see if Video Studio can handle the file.

Re: Video doesn't get added to project
With the capture device I got a long while back and coincidentally it's also made by Corel. Their software included doesn't work so I had to find an alternative. I read Virtual Dub was the best one and AVI was the only format they had built in I guess. Shame if I have to do it over especially if I have to use a different capture software, the video looks great using Virtual Dub and the interface is simple enough so the only problem really is like you said the file is too big.
