Has CVS ever been 99% stable?

Post by excalibur1814 »

Serious question...

Has anyone here NEVER, and I mean ever, NOT had VideoStudio crash? Let's narrow it down to the last four main versions.

2022 - Crashed (Surface Pro 8. )
2021 - Crashed (Multiple computers)
2020 - Crashed (Multiple computers)
2019 - Crashed (Multiple computers)

I recall that 2019 and 2020 were pretty good, as I've created most of my videos with them. Still experienced crashes and errors.

Thanks.

The answer is "It depends what you are using it for and what features you're using." For example, if you are only creating simple slideshows, then it's undoubtedly 99% stable.

I find VS2018 very stable for most of my use cases. However, it's close to useless when using the 3D Title Editor, but that feature in VS2021 works reasonably well.

While increased stability is important, it's also important that VS render without introducing artifact like sound blips.

An interesting question is if VS20xx is more or less stable than other comparable NLEs. With that in mind, consider the following feedback on DaVinci Resolve:
Several users are reporting that they’re trying to use DaVinci Resolve to edit some video, but the software crashes every time they try to open it. Other users report that they are able to do some editing, but the crashes occur several minutes after the application has been started. The issue is reported to occur on Windows 10, Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 7.
In short, if someone has found the perfect full-featured NLE, then it would be interesting to hear which one it is and how much it costs.

As CVS is part of the NLE software family with gazillion members, if it was 99% stable it was expelled by the Boss.
The Crash is fundamental feature of NLE that uses crazy FX's and resolutions .

Dammit! The only two people to reply are on my ignore list. I'll never know now. (Cries internally but knows he'll be okay).

had you said that in the first place you probably would not get any replies.

since release in February I have used 2022 for testing, not needed to create my own projects.
Even so I have had one crash and that may well have been user fault as I was trying to create a video with non standard frame sizes.
As the program does not allow setting project properties to the odd sizes, pushing the boundaries of what the program can do, I tried a few options only for the program to crash.
I did eventually manage to create the video with odd frame sizes but not using the format that I needed.

so yes I have made it crash.

I always use standard HD sizes, don't have 4K camera or HEVC
MTS from Panasonic 900 series cam and MP4 from Sony and Mov from Canon 7D all work ok.

Recent tests for the forum regarding Pan & Zoom, Customise Motion and Variable Speed worked without problems, no crashes.

now I have installed the Trial version to see how that performs, so far all good.

Thank you Trevor.

The reason why I created this is due to a Youtuber stating that Corel VS has NEVER, ever, crashed on them. They build their own rig, update to the latest drivers etc, but still state that it has never crashed. Ever. Every version I've had has crashed in one form or another. Overall, I really like the application so i'm not going out of my way to trash it. I'll be there for 2023.

Oh well. Onwards with life.

I'm just getting back to video editing and I'm using a 7 year old laptop with 16GB of RAM. I've tested the free version of DaVinci Resolve, my experiences with it were not as bad as the quote in the post by @tletter. It did crash, and there are some codecs that it doesn't work well with. This week I started to test VS 2021 Ultimate, and I've had a number of crashes with it. Some were during building a title without doing anything special and some were during Customise Motion. I don't think you'll find any NLE or any software that doesn't crash. I'll probably continue to use VS 2021 because I have a number of MKV files that don't work well with DaVinci.

You could use a transcoder, e.g. HandBrake, to convert these MKV to a format that DaVinci can ingest.

@tletter, I've used FFMPEG to convert some as a test. It may be the direction I'm going because of some issues using Customize Motion with Titles, but that is way off topic of this thread. I have to do further testing, and if I still have issues, I'll probably open a thread.

I have several video editors on my computer. Video Pro X12, Resolve Studio 17, Pinnacle Studio 25, Hitfilm Pro 2021.3, Vegas Pro 19 and of course VS2022. See my computer specs on the right.
Each one of the editors have crashed/locked up one time or another, but all have been basically reliable for me to edit. I use each one for specific tasks. Each excels in different areas.
But not one of them has been 100% stable with no crashes. If doing simple editing, I don't think any of them would crash. Now start using plugins, animation, FX, you open up the possibilities of something happening.
I do a "Save As" renaming the project as I go along when I don't want to have to recreate anything over again.
For "me" VS2022 has been pretty stable.
