Can we undo a step when using Freehand Selection tool?

While tracing around a subject, using the Freehand Selection tool with Smart Edge, I accidentally mis-clicked and the marquee closed prematurely. I was then left with an incompleted selection. I played with the options in the History palette (F3) but was unable to go back one step, so that I could resume tracing the subject. The Undo button removes the marquee completely, ignoring all the mouse clicks to that point. Is there, say, a hotkey for undoing a click while using the Freehand Selection tool/Smart Edge?

When it happens (closed prematurely), I switch the Mode to Add and continue my selection.
