Bizarre behaviour of timeline

Post by zaphodikus »

I have made a screen recording of a specific applciation window, so the recording is not a common aspect ratio at all, and whenever i drop that clip into the timeline the clip wont actually play in the timeline. I record the clip with videostudio's own screen recorder Multicam Lite, but I kinda dont like that app , but when i recorded using Blueberry software's Flashback Express Pro 5.0 , VS also is not happy either, so I'm trying multiple things here.
New project.
1. import clip to timeline, the clip will playback just fine if i dont touch anything else
2. move the scrubber at all and then it will not play anything, the play button jumps you to the end of the timeline.

It breaks playback of any clips I later add in the timeline, nothing will "play", so it's almost as if the codecs that encoded the file are doing something the videostudio filters do not expect. Pretty sure I have had this kind of error before, woudl have loved to get an error or warning message.

I just got VS to export the video by making a new project and just exporting to 1920x800, so i get small black bars at top and bottom of screen, which is fine. but I now have the same issue, the moment I modify the timeline, the clip will not play any audio at all.

/edit
OK, now I see some of the problem. any video clips at all are doing the same thing, basically VS is unhappy with a de-codec, but any clips just skip to the end the minute you modify the clip. some windows updates no doubt caused this, anything I installed in the last month possibly. Anyone had similar issues?

I have just unplugged my headphones, and rebooted machine, since for some reason I though it might be audio driver related. The skipping to en persists, and it does it if there is sample clip, an ABI or a quicktime MOV in the timeline.
I also turned off hardware acceleration and proxy, but nothing changes. Unusable. I'm going to install that other video editor program which some people use and see if the problem exhibits there too. It's strange.

/edit the other "freemium" editor app which will remain unnamed because for reasons, works perfectly fine, when importing the same clips that dont work or that VS completely is dead. Going to uninstall, (joy of finding which NAS machine I stuck the installer files on follows.) If no updates, assume re-install solved it I guess.

Can you confirm which version of Video Studio and screen capture, your profile shows 2021.

Using MCL we have an option to choose a recording format, which have you used.
Right click your recording for properties, what are they or screen grab that panel to attach image to your post
After recording unusual frame sizes I normally insert these to the overlay tracks.
The project properties being set to standard HD settings, maybe using the Lake Sample properties.

Can you try using the overlay track for your recordings.

Some clips like this are best converted in HandBrake so that VS can handle them.

I normally would just use ffmpeg and force it to convert just the container, and sometimes to re-encode, but eventually it dawned on my that no clips would play properly at all.

I did a repair, that did not work, then I re-installed, and although I've got all fresh settings, it's working fine so far. Something must have eaten a shared file. It ate up my entire afternoon though so I did not get a chance to upload a video of me learning some campanology... which reminds me, another topic, shotgun mics.

OK - while investigating another bug report so I can show a demo of the bug, I found the cause.
Changed my video project profile from "mobile" to "online" somehow resolved the skipping on project playback fix - I think it's got to do with the aspect ratio of the project and of the output being vastly different that makes it just do this? It's really cramping my ability to just import some clip sizes and not worry.

/edit
It's not really solving things for me, some clips just break VS it wont render my clip out and won't just playback the project unless I mute the track with a screen recording - a screen recording that I made using Corel VS's screen multicam recorder app. Not as much fun as it should be.
