I saw them, they are old (not that current VS is issues free)

Some are recent and report ongoing issues, e.g.:

A powerful easy to use program. However, it has one shortcoming that can be a pain you know where. It has a tendency to crash to the desktop unexpectedly. However, you can save your results and specify the time interval to backup your work which saves the day. I use three minutes. If they would fix this ongoing problem it would be outstanding, but they are recalcitrant to do so. This includes VS 2020-VS 2022 as earlier version I do not have.

Most of these are paid reviews. Even tho this one looks good, I have never seen one that really addresses the issues reported on user forums for the product. If they did, maybe the vendor would fix them. I once tried that tactic (suggested this be a feature of their review process) with a reveiwer - but it was like talking to brick wall.

I don't think people that review the software actually stress it like a "regular" user would. They might do a basic project, but certainly can not use all the features in the period of time the review has to be finished. With their other reviews of software that I own, and they've commented on maybe a missing feature, it's because they do not use the software extensively, and know where the feature is.
But PCMag has always like VS and PD. And there will always be problems with any software.

I love how PCmag has all of that empty space around the article. No point in having a 1080p monitor.

Think how it looks on a 4K monitor. But then, if you were reading the article on a cell phone....

Overall, the review was very positive and pointed out features the users might want. Like all those "face" things. And it's still a pretty good editor!

But the PCMag editors choice for 2022 is CyberLink PowerDirector

@RobertOZ, the reviewer has always selected PD as the #1 choice with VS a second choice for years. It's a matter of personal preference.
The reviews of Davinci Resolve, and Vegas Pro were incomplete. Features he was looking for are there.
And also was compared an old version of Movie Edit Pro (now Movie Studio), not the current one with Infusion 3.

I had PD many years ago before Pinnacle had multicam.
PD does have nice features, but so do a lot of other software. After I finished my multicam project, I actually tried editing with it. It was "ok", but not my "cup of tea".
I uninstalled it. I stayed with their forum, knew people who complained about bugs being banned because of it. Now, I am constantly spammed with email offers.
Nothing can make me use the software again, even if given to me for free. It's a matter of personal preference.

Tony,
I was a CyberLink Beta Tester for years, versions 5,6,7,8 & 9
As I could never get PD9 to function properly and had many sessions with the Devs to no avail, I gave up and moved to Corel Video Studio version X4 and all versions since.
PD6 was, in my opinion the most stable version and at the time I did find PD was just that little bit more user friendly than the opposition editors. CyberLink actually provided some of us beta testers copies of the other NLEs so that we could make a genuine comparison, from memory that was with PD7. But I had a major altercation with the then forum moderator so never returned and VS with all its faults in still my preferred editor, For comparison purpose I also have installed Pinnacle Studio 24 Ult, Magix Movie Edit Pro Premium and Adobe Premiere Elements, I do have many other NLEs available if needed

PD is not as user friendly as VS. They don't even provide a Fade to Black Transition, albeit a ton of other Fade Transitions.. They have too many Fancy Dan transitions to begin with. Editing is not as good. In VS I can drag a cut clip directly to the Library.-not so in PD. There are many more examples of complexity. I do use PD for very specfic tasks. Their 360 editor is better than VS and a few other things. They have too much overload. VS with all its problems is still my editor of choice.

@RobertOZ, PS24 is not the best version to use. I have it only for troubleshooting other user's issues, but for functionality, it's a "pig" for me.
I have nothing against anyone using PD, or any software for that matter. Use what you want. I didn't like it for editing, so used it for the one project with mulitcam and that was it. Uninstall.
PS24 is on the "next to be uninstalled" list....PS25 Ultimate is installed.

I found that using PD18 was fine - I obtained it when VS2020, 2019, 2018, X10 and X9 all jammed up (opening Share) on a desktop under a migrated win10, and nothing I did could fix it and ultimately I concluded something that Vs leaves in the registry related to the OS of installation was the cause. The PD terminology for functions varied and clearly methods were not the same, but it generally gave the same results as VS. What really impressed me was the support for the product. I experienced only 1 bug in it, and there was an operable work around; that bug was fixed soon after reporting it, but of particular note
1. the user forum moderator was/is a cyberlink person, and clearly reads the posts, evidenced by an occasional intervention, and an immediate response when addressed. No experience of the customer service centre because of that forum response.
2. the on-going service pack policy - SP's for 18 months after first product release, even when the product had been superseded by a newer version.
As I have posted about in this forum on several occasion, if Corel did the same, VS would be unbeatable.

Nevertheless after nearly 10 years using VS, a product change like this was an 'adjustment' - a learning experience where you think something is the same because it uses the same terms, only to find it's not. When VS 2021 and 2022 worked when installed on the same win 10 desktop platform I reverted to using it; personal preference might be pushing it, but I do think familiarity counts for a lot.

David,
The CyberLink Forum moderator is a friend of mine, lives in Lancashire and yes, he is very knowledgeable about PD, some of the solutions he comes up with are unbelievable, there may be more than one moderator, but if he signs off with "Cheers" that's Adrian.
The previous moderator, a fully paid position in the early days, was also a colleague, until we had a major disagreement on the way he administered his role and I subsequently changed NLEs
