VS 2022 ultimate crashes quietly and often
I've been a VS user for some time, and up until v.2021 I had the annoying occasional crash. v.2021 was extremely stable, however, and so I was hesitant to buy and install v.2022 because of course a new version of any software product is going to have its tics until things get sorted. But I decided to go for it.
And I rather like the improvements I've seen in v.2022! Unfortunately, it has crashed repeatedly. Today, for example, it has quietly crashed about five or six times. These aren't "messy" crashes, and I haven't lost anything important, so no disaster. I remember how v.2019 used to like to hang up, turn my laptop into a boat anchor for several minutes, and then require a reboot before it would start up again. But v.2022 so far has just gone up in a poof and it lets me start right back up again. It also starts up very quickly, which is nice. The quick startup might be because I upgraded to a SSD instead of a mechanical drive.
I seem to recall that one problem that has existed in the past is that one might have to uninstall the previous version and run a cleanup tool -- is this still the case?

Re: VS 2022 ultimate crashes quietly and often
Is there some report about crash where we can see a reason?
Old graphics driver, low memory or something...?
Otherwise it can be outside of VS 2022 ...like some antivirus, anti malware blocking something to execute etc, etc...

Re: VS 2022 ultimate crashes quietly and often
Like I said, "quietly and often". There is no apparent trace of what happened. No exception messages, and even a look at the Windows Event Viewer is fruitless. While using VS in the past half hour before posting this reply, VS has silently terminated twice. Once just after rendering a short video, and once in the middle of a render. Yesterday, it silently terminated in the midst of some other operation. If I happen to be watching the screen, all I see is VS disappearing from view and whatever else happens to be next in the view stack suddenly replacing what I see.
This is happening on a brand-spanking new re-install of Windows 10 64-bit. My old hard drive finally died 2 weeks ago, and the shop replaced it with an SSD, so the machine is faster than ever. I re-installed VS2021 just a few days after getting the laptop back, and then, fatefully, I decided to bite on the reduced price for the VS2022 upgrade. Since my original post above, I have completely uninstalled both VS2021 and VS2022, and ran both versions' cleanup utilities several times. So we're not talking about some machine with underlying problems. It is pretty much brand-new, except for the motherboard. I am very careful about what gets installed on this box, and after getting it back from the shop, the first thing I did was install malware protection and anti-virus (Bitdefender in this case).
Are there any known incompatibilities between anti-virus products and VS2022? In my last installation of VS2021, I wasn't having silent crashes of VS, at least to this extent. It did occur, but extremely rarely.

Re: VS 2022 ultimate crashes quietly and often
Hi Cyberherbalist
I too have used VS for some time and upgraded to v.2021 recently
but look forward to v.2022.
I think your recollection is correct, that the earlier
versions need to be cleaned up.
I think VS is robust on the install and can go into older
folders. Then some utility routines get confused by the new
names of the root directories.
If you don't mind, here is an edited version of a reply
I made to a v.2021 thread. Hope it is useful to you.
The following may fix the problem for you if you have used
previous versions of VideoStudio.
The Symptoms encountered for 2 Windows 10 Machines after a full
uninstall of earlier versions of VideoStudio:
1) The DVDs had the latest firmware. Drivers are provided by Windows.
2) The VideoStudio 2021 included program MyDVD, did burn DVDs OK.
Although this is an acceptable way to assemble a project and burn DVDs,
I wanted to do it from the project VideoStudio Share window too.
3) No amount of trickery could persuade the in project VideoStudio Share
window to burn DVDs.
The fix for this problem was:
In fairness I should mention I did not always install earlier versions to
the default folders. However in this instance the default folders were the
ones that needed cleanup.
Before you do this do a complete uninstall of VideoStudio 2021.
Then reboot/restart your computer.
The Solution was to delete the folders for earlier versions of VideoStudio
that did not get deleted during the uninstall. I found some in 4 locations.
Caution: Do not delete folders to other Corel programs you may be using.
For windows users this would be in C:\Program Files\Corel\ and
C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\
*************************************************************
Example:
If you delete VideoStudio 2021 and the find a file:
C:\Program Files\Corel\VideoStudioPro; then delete folder "VideoStudioPro".
**************************************************************
Also in windows are C:\users\UserName\AppData\Local\Corel\UEIP and
C:\users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Corel
I deleted any unexpected VideoStudio folders and have not had any problem.
Reinstall VideoStudio 2021 and you should be good to go.

Re: VS 2022 ultimate crashes quietly and often
Upon deeper checking, thanks to suggestions from Jim G, I have found a crash log folder in AppData. Since they're not in a Corel-labelled folder, I wonder if these have something to do with VS crashes? Anyway, the dumps do seem to correspond to actual crashes I have had over the last few days. Two are named "MultiCamCapture.exe.*.dmp" and a few more are named "dllhost.exe.*.dmp", with different numbers in the * node. I do remember trying to run the multi-cam utility, but I don't think I got crashes.
Anyway, it's all very mysterious. I may uninstall and go back to VS 2021 for the time being and wait until 2022 has matured a bit.

The VS dump files that I have are in the "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\CrashDumps" folder and have names like vstudio.exe.43936.dmp.Cyberherbalist wrote: I have found a crash log folder in AppData.
It might be helpful if these dump files could be read by those experiencing crashes, but unfortunately, these are binary files so reading there contents is not straightforward.

Re: VS 2022 ultimate crashes quietly and often
Having the same issue.
Windows 10, Ryzen 3900X, AMD RX 580. VS 2021 on the same machine used to be pretty stable, VS 2022 crashes(closes without an error) in every editing session at random point. Anyone else was able to fix this? Is VS 2022 stable for you?
Completely uninstalled both 2022 and 2021, installed only 2022, also checked/removed the 2021 leftover folders as per the above suggestions - did not help.

If you were to use the library samples, video and images do you still get these crashes.
Video samples are a little limited but there are 4K video available to use
You do not give any details of the type of files you are using, video recorded using phones / tablets can cause issues when using a variable frame rate

It crashes with the Sample_Lake.mp4 file as well. Steps:lata wrote: ↑Mon Apr 18, 2022 9:52 am If you were to use the library samples, video and images do you still get these crashes.

1. Drag it to the timeline of a new project.
2. Reply yes to the prompt to use the video properties for project settings.
3. Click somewhere in the middle of the timeline and try to play with the space button. VideoStudio quits.
It is not always reproducible with the same steps, but out of the 5 tries it crashed twice.
Further note - I installed Videostudio on an Intel laptop and did some limited testing - I have not been able to crash it so far. So the problem seems to be system specific, but the two systems are very different, so not sure where to start troubleshooting.

FWIW I followed you steps and used the Lake sample clip. I repeated the experiment, like you, 5 times but couldn't force a crash even once. My computer profile is under my avatar.

Have a nice day. Even me after opening the VS2022 program and inserting the video / it doesn't matter the format / and starting right with the mouse on the clip or timeline, the program failed. It made no announcement. After reopening the program and inserting the video, I first clicked on PLAY, I just started playing the video and then I stopped playing and I could do whatever program kept up. Try to do these steps first and you should like it .....
