New user of media studio pro v7, with hd plug-in. Willingly paid more for it than the average home software package, figuring the extended value is there. Connected my Sony HDR-HC1 via IEEE 1394 and started a simple 10-second capture. So far so good.
The resulting mpeg wouldn't play on my Sony HD plasma display, so I thought it might have something to do with the Mpeg settings (Mpeg-1, Mpeg-2, Aspect Ratio, etc). I'm an advanced computer user, but a novice with video capture and editing. Went to Application Help which said I could edit these settings in Setup->Mpeg Settings. When I went there, most options were grayed out. Well, no problem, I'll use Help to figure out what's going on. This is where the nightmare begins ...
Application Help didn't have anything I could find, so I went to online help. Clicked on support->Customer Service and .... after a several minute pause ... nothing.
Exited out of application. Rebooted computer, started IE and went to ulead.com. Decided to try the knowledgebase. Typed in and submitted by question and ... after a several minute pause ... an error.
No problem, I thought. I'll just download the user manual and read it in there. Went to the link for downloading user's manuals (I purchased online directly from ulead.com) and ... I'm told I'm not authorized to view that page.
Okay, frustration is rising. But I see FAQ section online and decide I can try and see if my question is handled there. I look and look and ... nothing.
Alright, I'm really getting mad. I've been looking for a simple answer to a simple question, and 30 minutes later I have nothing. I'm going to call customer support! Go the website, dig down in the links and .... nothing.
No phone numbers. Just a form I can fill out to submit my question and hope for an answer sometime. Alright, I see what's going on. They CLEARLY do not want to talk to me, so I'll submit their form. Fill it in in detail (most of the above), click submit and ... you guessed it ... an error!
Request timed out! I paid how much for this software???? And after 1.5 hours I have gotten absolutely NO SUPPORT!
Is this for real? No people to talk to? A web server that is painfully slow and unstable? No access to user's manuals? Errors submitting requests for help, errors submitting questions to the knowledgebase?
One of the slowest servers I've been on in a while ... typically waiting 5-10 seconds, sometimes 1 minutes (or more) to view a page.
Please tell me I'm doing something wrong, that no one else ever experienced what I'm experiencing, and most importantly how to get the same level of service I'm accustomed to for my $49 software packages.
Customer No-Service?
I'm sorry, but a rant about the service, whether justified or not, will not get you anywhere here.
The guys here will help you, but only if you help yourself. You need to tell us politely exactly what you are doing, in detail, on what equipment (hardware, OS etc.). There are many knowledgeable guys on this forum, including many of the beta testers, who give their precious time for no reward. So please take a deep breath and start again, so that we can see whether we can help you.
Oh! You didn't even mention which of the Ulead servers you were logged into (there are at least 4 that I know of). Did you try any of the others? It is always possible that one of them could be overloaded at a given moment.

Help getting started
Two questions:
1. Why are most of my Setup menu-bar options grayed out in the Video Capture version 7.0 module? All but the last 2 are grayed out. More specifically, how do I "un-gray" the MPEG setup option if it's grayed out?
2. Where do I setup the format of the output file (Mpeg 1, mpeg 2, avi, 4:3, 16:9) from the video capture?
I am using Media Pro 7.0, running on Windows XP. I am connecting to a Sony HDP-HCR HD camcorder via IEEE 1394 cable.

I'm not into HD, only DV, so I can't be specific as to the choices you have. However, there are very few choices available with DV and most of the menu items are greyed out, as you describe. Typically, the DV "default capture" is to AVI and we have a choice of only type 1 and type 2 (we can transcode directly to some other formats, but with losses). This AVI is then taken into VE for editing and conversion to any other format or aspect ratio we may wish.
I suggest that you do something similar with HD: capture using the default settings and do your conversions after editing.
No doubt, others with HD experience will be able to elaborate on this.
