Okay, folks, my first post so please be kind. I'm not a heavy user, so think of me as a newbie or a complete idiot. Not computer illiterate by any means, but I don't use Paintshop Pro X8 very often, so I find the interface very obscure at times.
I wanted to put some text on top of a photo I have. I'd like it to have a background color too, one that kind of 'haloes' the letters, if you can visualize that. The photo itself is of trees, so I want the text to stand out, but having this kind of off-white "fade" around the letters. Is there a way of doing that?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Text Background
Hello Rancher1309. Welcome to the forums.
Yes there is. It's called a layer style or layer effect. (I don't remember PSP's official name and I am not at my computer but it's something like that. It applies to the whole vector layer.
In the layers palette Right click and select properties to bring up the layer properties. Look for the Layer Styles tab on the properties dialog. The effects will be listed on the left with the settings on the right.
It's called Outer Glow. You can choose the size and color of the glow. It'll surround the text as you describe.

I'm just contributing a screenshot for what LeviFiction explained. The purple arrow shows where you have to click:
