Woodgrain effect?
Hi everyone!
Im brand new here and new to Paintshop Pro
I am changing the colours of part of a photo, but want to create a wood effect on them
I notice that within Effects there is no option(s) for this
Can anyone please tell me how this can be done?
Thanks

Hi legepe,
What do you mean by "woodgrain effect"?
Could you post an example?

Re: Woodgrain effect?
There are at least two ways you can apply a woodgrain texture to an image (or part of an image). Both will require that you have a selected woodgrain image that you can use as the effect PSP will apply.
Materials pallet - Texture button, will apply selected texture to your Foreground/Background tabs once you check the add texture checkbox. You can apply this texture with any of the add/change color tools (fill, paintbrush etc...)
Effects>Texture Effects>Texture - select a texture effect from the dropdown and this will apply to your image/layer/selection depending on what you are applying it to.

Re: Woodgrain effect?
Thanks for all your replies!
I am using PSP - 2022 on WIN 10
I have found the woodgrain in material properties/pattern, (I beleive that somehow, and unknowingly I have put it in there?) however I am struggling to understand how to apply it to the selected part of the photo
The only way I can seem to do this is with paint brush, and by doing so removes/flattens the contours/shapes within the selected part of what I want to apply the effect to?
Is there no way of creating a custom effect that can be applied? (when I open effect browser, it gives the impression that it will allow files to be added when dragged into that area opened, but nothing works?)
Any further advice would be very much appreciated

Re: Woodgrain effect?
You could add a new transparent raster layer above your image, paint on that and then change the blend mode to overlay or one of your choosing. That would retain the image detail and not look so flat.

Re: Woodgrain effect?
Hi and thanks again for your help and advice!
I am however struggling to successfully use Material Properties (using a new raster layer) Im not even getting close to what I want!
What I need is to add a picture file to Effects... Is this not possible to do?
I find it extremely ODD that PSP - 2022 does not have in there long list of so many different effects - Woodgrain! Or at least allow the user to add this! if not WHY NOT?
Please can you advise as I am starting to give up with PSP!
Thanks
legepe
Just to mention.. I am sure in earlier versions of PSP you were able to add your own effect files, or maybe I am mistaken???

Re: Woodgrain effect?
Okay, try going to Effects - Texture - Texture. Any images you have added to your Texture file will appear here. This will apply the texture effect to the entire image so you will either need to "select" the portion where you want the wood grain beforehand or mask it out after the fact.

Re: Woodgrain effect?
Go to the folder where the textures are stored and load (open) the wood grain texture in PSP.
Now, create a new raster layer (empty).
Select the Paint Brush and click on the Foreground color in the Materials Palette.
Choose Pattern instead of Texture.
You will see the wood grain texture in the pattern thumbnails.
Select it and paint with it on your empty raster layer.
Change the Blend Mode of the layer to Overlay, Soft Light or another mode.
You may also modify the Visibility of that layer.
If you want your images to be part of the Patterns, save them in the Pattern folder.

Re: Woodgrain effect?
You go to File - Preferences - File Locations and then click on Textures. A box on the right will show the location of the Corel texture files. Or if you can add a link to your personal file of textures by clicking 'add' and then browse to the location of your texture folder.
So you can add an image to the Corel default folder listed or just link to a folder of your own that contains all your texture images. You can use this same method for linking other resources like brushes, plug-ins, etc.
I have jpg, jpeg, png & tif texture files in my personal folder.

Sounds like you are not in the Complete Workspace. Go to File - Workspace - Complete.

Re: Woodgrain effect?
Im in complete workspace, Ive just tried essentials and gone back to complete but no different?
I have just checked on a different computer that Ive installed PSP - 2022 on and there is no File Location either in Preferences
Could it be possible because its still in its 30 day trial? Surely not!
Thigs availalbe in Preferences (on both comptuters):
General Program Preferences...
File Format Preferences...
File Format Associations...
