Excessive Lagging In Editor

Post by jgrease »

Hi all - I'm using Video Studio Ultimate 2020 23.3.0.651. I've been using VS for over a year with no problems. However, for the last couple of sessions I've had excessive lag within the timeline when I'm trying to scrub through a clip. The video won't move, and if I try to access the menus at the top of the page they don't respond. After 15-20 seconds the video suddenly starts playing and all of the menu items I tapped on suddenly respond. Can anyone point me in the right direction to figure out what's changed?

I would suggest to install a codec pack also to reset the library in the VS.
Also delete all proxy files and regenerate those.
Clearing the temp folder also is a good action to take.

  1. Have you changed the type of video clips that you're editing?
  2. Have you generated Smart Proxy files for all video clips?

Run absolutely nothing else but CVS, if you can help it. Do as above.

-Ctrl+Alt then del
-Task manager
-Details tab
-Scroll down to vstudio.exe
-Right click, set priority. Change to realtime

VS rarely comes close to fully utilizing available hardware, e.g. CPU & GPU. Hence keeping available resources idle won't speed up rendering.

It's unlikely that this will increase performance of VS, as Realtime enables you only getting a guaranteed answering time which makes it useful for processes involving data acquisition. However, if you have stats showing the benefit of using Realtime, pls post them.

I haven't changed video clips or format or anything. I've noticed that when it happens, the clip isn't highlighted like it would normally be. Nothing on my computer has changed. It had gotten so bad that I uninstalled and reinstalled CVS. Things worked fine for a while after reinstalling and now I'm back to this delay. I've also noticed a lag when I try to play sound clips using file explorer so I'm wondering if it's something on the windows side of things and not a CVS issue. I appreciate your response.

Thanks for your response. I'm not very savvy about codec packs and proxy files. Where can I find those?

I've gone to Task Manager during the lags, and the line for CVE will say "Not Responding" and then change to Corel Video Editor (2), leading me to believe this is somehow two versions running at the same time or two windows with the same program up. I'm really losing my patience with this - I can't uninstall and reinstall every time I edit a video. Anyone have anything else I can try?

As tletter reply regarding Smart Proxy
Go to preferences (F6) – performance tab – enable Smart Proxy
From the timeline, right click your clip for Create Smart Proxy

May take a while to create the proxy file, when done, does that improve playback

Thanks for the suggestion. Every time I try and select something on the timeline it's freezing up or stopping. That's when I can go to Task Manager and get the "Not Responding" message. When I try and move through a clip the program becomes completely unresponsive for like a minute. I tried the Smart Proxy and it isn't changing anything. No idea what to do - I'm assuming it's more of a Windows issue than a Corel issue at this point.

What type of video files are you editing
Video with a variable frame rate can be troublesome for Video Studio, much prefers a constant frame rate

If you use the libraries Media samples / backgrounds, video or images do you still have this Not Responding showing on Task Manager

As you think it may be your pc, have your graphics drivers had a recent update?
Try deselecting the acceleration options from Settings - Preferences F6 Performance tab.

So I'm always using mp4 video from my Canon camera - always on the same frame rate (that I know of). I haven't updated my graphics drivers recently so I'll be doing that. I've also cleared out my temp files and that seems to have helped. I'll update later today. Thanks very much!

Ok - so I deleted the temp files through Windows. I've updated my display driver to the latest version. Everything worked fairly well for a while, then I put my PC to sleep for a while and when I returned, I'm back to a LONG pause (about 15 seconds or so between when I hit play and when the video plays) - once the editor plays the video the timeline has moved ahead about the same length of time and the video is still frozen for a while longer. Prior to a month or so ago I never had a problem with CVE. I've not installed any new software or made any changes to my computer. I'm really at my wits end with this. I've been quite happy with CVE and the results I've gotten from day one. I thought this might be a Windows issue since one of the recent updates, but then I'd guess more people would be having similar issues. Any other ideas would be welcome. Thanks again for the help to date.
