Trouble loading video files directly from ZOOM recordings

Post by david1939 »

I've been asked to produce videos from recordings of ZOOM meetings. ZOOM has the capability of making recordings and, with the proper permissions, you can download from the ZOOM site the video files which claim to be mp4 (at least that's the filename extension). However, when I try to import the file into VS2020 for editing VS locks up and I have to go to Task Manager to close VS. I've fiddled around using VLS to try to convert the file and can manage to get something that VS will load. Has anyone had the same experience and come up with a smarter way of getting the video into VS? Looking at the file properties as displayed by Windows 10, image is 1920x1080, data rate 1630kbps, 25 frames/sec, mono audio at 126kbps.

Two suggestions to try:
  1. Let VS match the properties of the video clips when you first create your VSP.
  2. Convert the fps rate to standard rate using HandBrake
You could also post a sample clip so people can investigate the issue.

1. Won't work since the video file never gets loaded, VS freezes as soon as I select and attempt to load the file. I've just now tried HandBrake, but it's basically the same as converting using VLC media player (both these procedures have the cpu working continuously at 100%!). So I do have a solution running a conversion. I'm curious why VS refuses to load the original file and freezes. Anyone else out there with experience working with ZOOM files?

Providing a small sample clip using a service like Dropbox would help others in testing the format.

Will you, david1939, post a sample clip?

The only editor I'm familiar with is VS, and I can't load the file into it to trim! I've just been looking at the Video Editor that came with Windows 10 and find it quite opaque to use. I've just now uploaded the whole file to my GoogleDrive, and this link will get you to it to download as much as you like.

I've no problem loading your ZOOM file into any version of VS that I've installed, e.g. VS2021, VS2019, VS2018 and X10 (see following image). Hence there is no inherent problem with VS loading your file. Perhaps you're missing a codec, however, in my case the only non-Windows video codec installed is proDAD. You can check the installed audio and video codecs using the Windows System Information app (Components -> Multimedia).

I've no problem loading your ZOOM file into HandBrake (see image). When encoding your video film in HandBrake, the CPU is driven to about 90% but that is good as it's fully utilizing the available CPU power.

I have to report the same thing as tletter: I also have no trouble inserting, playing and editing that clip in VideoStudio. It seems to be a standard HD video, though with a surprisingly low data rate. But that shouldn't affect your computer's ability to accept and play it. From the accent of the gentleman, I'd guess the video comes from North America, but it was also surprising that the frame rate is 25 fps which is of course the frame rate for PAL video, rather than North American NTSC. But again, that is no reason why your computer cannot play or edit it.

I have added the clip to Handbrake, and yes it does run at about 93% to 95% consistently. Like tletter, though, this did not worry me. It's good to know the computer is devoting its resources to the job.

Maybe it's a feature of VS2020. However, I've just received another file to process and, guess what, it loaded fine and I did all the necessary editing and produced a new video file. The file I received has different properties to the previous ones with a frame size of 640x360. Waiting with bated breath for the next one! I'll also wait until Corel has a good deal on upgrade to VS2021. My thanks to your responses!
