VS Pro X10 now VERY slow

Post by jparnold »

I am starting to record my voice over for an edited video of a recent trip.
Every now and then VS appears to freeze for few seconds and I am wondering what could be the cause.

Firstly I am using a partition on a HDD which is not more than 69% full.

An example of the slowness is when I record a short narrative voice over for no more than 5 or 6 seconds after I press the ESC key to stop recording it took around 6 seconds for the audio clip to appear on the timeline and in the meantime I could NOT do anything else. It was if VS had stalled/stopped.

This is NOT 'confined' to doing voice over. Using the scrubber for example is a pain. I drag the scrubber along and nothing happens for a few seconds.

The total video is around 14 minutes and contains many video clips plus a few titles, and two music tracks with audio clips (background music) almost filling one of them and some audio split from some of the video clips which is much the same for other videos I have created in past years without experiencing this slowness.

What could be the cause and is there anything I can do to speed the operation up?

Hi John. All sounds a bit mysterious. First off, what are the project properties and the format of the video in the project?

Second, what is the size of the partition on the HDD you are using. I know you said it was not more than 69% full, but its size in relation to the size of your project could be important. As a rough guide, you would generally need about twice the space of the project itself to be able to edit properly or with reasonable speed. The extra space allows VS to do things like prepare temporary files where necessary, such as when you are playing in Project mode as opposed to Clip. So with a project of 14 minutes, you would need the space of approximately twice that in whatever format you were using to get decent performance. That's why it could be important to know exactly how much space is contained in that 31% of the partition.

Third, is the HDD an external or internal one? If external, it is a USB 2.0 or 3.0 model?

Hello Ken
Format of the video is 1920 X 1080p MTS from my camera although it also contains a few short clips from my Go-Pro type camera which is at 60fps not 50fps as the bulk is which could be a problem I guess.
The project properties are -
MPEG Transport-Stream Files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 50 fps
Frame-based
(HDMV-PAL), 16:9
H.264 Video
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 25000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

The partition where my clips etc and VSP file is 462GB and there is 145GB free on an INTERNAL HDD and so plenty of space space I would have thought.

Once again the lag/hesitation is intermittent. I also wondered if it could be caused by OneDrive as somehow it seemed to get linked with my system after a W10 upgrade which I tried to remove.

Hi John
What makes you think it’s the One Drive
Do you use One Drive, if no then go to One Drive Settings and Choose Folders or Unlink this PC
You can view the sync folder by right clicking the One Drive cloud icon (should be showing lower right) select Open folder.
Any files here are being uploaded to the One Drive cloud.

Hi Trevor
I don't know if I am still using OneDrive but don't think so. All I know is that after a recent W10 update every time I deleted something to the trash can I got a message to advise that it was also doing it via OneDrive.
I researched OneDrive and think that I 'unlinked' myself from OneDrive but every now and then I was still getting information on my screen about OneDrive (but haven't seen it for a while).
I do NOT have a One Drive cloud icon bottom right of screen and was not aware of that until you pointed it out. There are so many strange things which have happened since that W10 update (now fixed) that I do not trust MS and now think of them as 'Big Brother' which annoys the hell out of me.
My brother in law refuses to use Windows anymore and now uses Unix OS but I have too many good apps which only run in Windows.
Once again this slowness is intermittent and when it does the mouse pointer turns in a 'cross hairs' like symbol - a bit like a + sign

Sounds like your one drive is still active.
The cloud icon may be hidden, there should be a small down arrow to hide some icons, maybe the cloud is there, you may find it via the Start menu, not on the pc to check, if you can find that then you can deselect the synchronised files, or Unlink the PC, unfortunately a windows update may change our choices.
One Drive is annoying that it uses our Documents folder to backup, ok if we want to do that.
I changed the sync folder to my D : Drive, then i manage the sync folder to share the files i want not what windows want.

Hi Trevor, No the One Drive icon isn't even 'under' the small down arrow. I have not noticed the 'popup' when I use the trash can for a while now and so suspect I am not part of it but wasn't sure until after reading youe responses.
The next time there is a significant part freeze I will take a snapshot of the screen.
