MSP 8 Comment and a question

Post by tv_news_guy »

Hi Gang,
Have only had the msp8 trial for two days and just finished a couple of projects on it to give it a real try. I use Avid Newscutter at work, and damn, I gotta say MSP8 rocks. I have been on MSP since 5.x ..it worked. 6x worked.. 7x worked.. 7x with hd plugin never worked for me.. but, lo and behold 8x works right outta the download. Sweet mother of God! Good work Ulead Gang!

One question: My beta runs out in 28 days. But it works. My 7.0 and HD plugin in is bought and paid for, but never worked. Do any of you know how much the upgrade is gonna be to 8.0? It really pains me to pay again when I just got 7.0 so I'm kinda hoping Ulead takes pity on those of us who have stuck with them for the long haul.

One more question.. and it could just be me.. I dont see any easy way to import the audio section of a clip. If I import the clip into the bin.. and double click on it to open it in the source window...I dont see anyway I can trim it up and then just drag the audio into an audio track. I know I am probably overlooking something real simple.. but hey, if after all these years I have to resort to opening the manual I am going to be real ashamed and I know none of you want that to happen. hehe

Many thanks.. for this, and all the help the forums have been in the past.. and a special shout out to Terry whose answers to others have solved all my problems (the editing ones anyway) in the past.

We are still under NDA for pricing questions (as if we knew, anyway) or other commercial issues, which are not in our domain.

However, speaking in generalities, may I point out that I've unfortunately been using PC-DOS/MS-DOS/Windows since the early 1980s. Do you think MS would give us a loyalty discount? Would Corel give me a loyalty discount for having used Draw! since v. 3 (it is now 12)? AFAIK, such things don't happen. In any case, if you "just" got 7.0, you must have got it at a mark-down price and the chances are that the price you paid plus the UG price for MSP8 will be less than the full price for MSP8, or nearly so.

You can trim an imported audio in the timeline - and there's nothing to be ashamed about opening the manual: I still do it from time-to-time: in fact, it is my first resort - often to re-find things I did three years ago but had forgotten in the meanwhile. :)

What? You didn't get your Microsoft OS frequent flyer card? Saves you money on every upgrade and can be used in bank machines anywhere? Only drawback is all those blue screens o'death in the atms. I do like the newest version of the card Bill Gates sent me. Now, in addition to the blue screen, it sends all the info to microsoft so that they can do absolutely nothing about it. Much better than the old card.
In reply to your very true answer that there is no such thing as a loyalty discount... I know. But hey, if enough folks start whining.. maybe some marketing droid will decide that a one time mailing to all MSP7 users offering a discount might be good for the old Ulead cash flow. You never know.

Hey I'm surprised with you, don't you know that such an offer will only be made a week after you buy the full version, regardless of when you buy the full version?

I have to say I love these kinds of posts. On another forum somebody referred to "marketing weenies", (I'm still wondering which is better - a weenie or a droid), but anyway I can say that we marketing weenies and droids generally support the idea of a loyalty discount, we are well aware of the benefits of a loyal user base (such as MediaStudio Pro enjoys), but unfortunately it's the BEANCOUNTERS who don't agree with us. :)

Thanks for your interest, and I am sure you will enjoy MSP 8 very much and you will not find it unreasonable priced.

Ok..Now I have been put in my place. Tobie that comment was not meant to be insulting to you in any way. But I would like to clarify where the word droid came from. What is the only contact most of us end user types have with the Ulead Marketing Dept? Answer: Those wonderful targeted automated (hence droids) emails sent out to all registered users from the marketing department. Rarely (ummm read that as "never") do they ever offer a product that might be important to the poor sap getting the email. Fun to read though. And for what it is worth.. you guys are NOT the worst. My favorite is Pinnacle. Here I am... a registered owner of their top-o-the-line product Liquid, and every couple of weeks I get a note telling me I can save on their lowest common demoninator products. sheesh.. waste of electrons.
Anyway from now on, if I refer to marketing droids I will do it in the following way.... "those ulead marketing droids, except for Tobie who is a heckuva nice guy etc etc." If any other Ulead Marketing people feel offended I will be glad to add their name to the exceptions list upon proper notification. Oh yeah.. proper notification requires, signing up as a registered user and downloading and installing service packs one through sixteen in numerical order (remember you have to uninstall your monitor to get update thirteen to load properly). hehe

Hehe, apology accepted, thanks :)

As far as I know, our email blasts are supposed to be fairly targeted, so as a registered MSP user you COULD get something about PhotoImpact (every videographer also needs an image editor), and yes, even something about VideoStudio (since we know many pro users also have VideoStudio in their toolkit), but it shouldn't be THAT far off the mark. I'll have a word with the web team (who is repsonsible for sending out those).

I'll go off to my pod now to recharge.

Personally I DO find it unreasonbly priced when I just paid $300 for the HD plugin ALONE about two months ago! And on top of that, I had a coupon from tech support that was rejected when I tried to use it. And heaping insult on injury, I was ignored when I sent a very cordial email about it being rejected.

Forget customer loyality - how about some basic sense of fairness and honesty from Ulead.

hmmm..I beg to differ.

Let me say right up front that even though I whined earlier in this thread..now that msp8 is released I can't b*tch about the price. Sure.. upgrade after upgrade at 3-5 hundred a pop is a P.I.T.A. but.. for those of you who play with Avid or any of the broadcast toys.. this really is a helluva bargain. That said.. I do want to get my two cents worth in.
I really wish Ulead would be more agressive. Damn it. I love the products and have for years. I can fly as fast on MSP as I can on Newcutter and the end results can be identical. But **attn Ulead** youse guys needs mo market share. Drop the bomb. Get MSP 8 out there and get it out there fast. Remake the name and then go back to dinging us for updates and such. Even though I LOVE MSP*.. I am going to wait. Prolly like many editors out there I already have more than one option to edit with. There is no reason for me to "hurry up" and upgrade to 8. Did I say "I love MSP8?" I just wanted to make sure I said it enough so Tobie (that real nice guy from the Marketing Dept) could see fit to send me a loyal customer coupon. btw.. here's an IDEA. Remember bundling ULEAD? How bout marrying MSP8 with (I dunno) someones 250gig hard drive for us High Def folks who need right now to replace our raid arrays with larger ones? Damn.. I should work for you guys.

Yes, it’s a nice piece of software and I’ll probably go ahead and upgrade. But it’s really ugly to think I just paid more than the upgrade cost to purchase something that represents maybe 5% of the code base of the new version. And now they’re giving it away for VS. Most reputable companies offer free upgrades when you buy an old version just before the release of a new one. But then reputable companies also honor coupons they give you.

I use to recommend Ulead to everybody I know. I’ve bought most of their products. But that was then…

Tobie, you may want to explain to the bean counters that’s there’s a breakpoint where they start loosing all their beans because they’ve become too greedy and anal with their beans.
