Problem with the Sample and Fill tool
Hi,
I'm seeing a problem with my PaintShop Pro 2022 and some previous versions working with the Eyedropper tool.
It has to do with the Sample and Fill function.
It is the Fill function that is not working.
Instead of filling with the color selected by the Eyedropper, it fills with white color.
Do you also see this phenomenon in your version, or am I the only one suffering from this problem?
Could you test in your version?
Note :
I have already done a PSP reset and my Windows 10 is updated.
The regular Fill tool works as expected.

Re: Problem with the Sample and Fill tool
I have PSP 2022 build 24.1.0.27. I open an image (in fact the Artistic.jpg sample which came with the program). I choose the Eyedropper and click on the Sample and Fill function on the menu bar. I right click over one of the colors to "fill" the eyedropper. I move to another part of the image and right click the eyedropper again to "empty" it. And the color of that section changes to the selected new color. So I can't replicate your problem...

Hi Ken, thank you. You performed the steps exactly the way I did.

It would be interesting if someone could observe the same problem as me.

Re: Problem with the Sample and Fill tool
EDIT: Okay this is weird.
First I'm re-doing my post so Jean-Luc I saw the same thing. No matter what I tried it was filling in white as the color. And the recorded script showed white as the color so it wasn't just a visual fluke or some weird blend mode math it was literally using the color white as the fill color.
I then decided to try something. I went into my program preferences and I changed a single value. I changed one of my auo actions. It doesn't matter which one because that's not the cause. Now it works. I tried changing it back but the tool still works. I have not been able to break it again.

Re: Problem with the Sample and Fill tool
This is weird. In PSP2022 the tool works as expected. I just tried it in PSP2021 and it fills with white. Next I tried changing an auto-action to see if it would fix things but no luck; still filling with white.

Re: Problem with the Sample and Fill tool
I might note that I have never changed any of the settings in PSP, and I have never looked at auto actions. So that is not the reason, for me at least, that mine works properly. I don't have PSP 2021 on this relatively new computer, or any other version for that matter, so cannot try it out on that.

Re: Problem with the Sample and Fill tool
I have a different issue following Ken's steps. I right click on a color to fill the eyedropper, move to another part of the image with a different color and right click to empty the eyedropper, and the whole image is covered by the color with which I filled the eyedropper. This is PSP 2019 64bit.

Re: Problem with the Sample and Fill tool
JoeB - What are your fill tool settings? Is match mode set to None?
Sample and Fill will use your last used Fill tool settings when doing the fill.

Re: Problem with the Sample and Fill tool
Thanks Levi, that was the issue! I assumed that any required options for the Sample and Fill tool would be those on its Tool Options bar, and they are minimal. Who'da guessed that you first had to set up the options with the Fill Tool selected. If you're experimenting with the Sample & Fill until you get not just the match mode but particularly the tolerance correct you would have to keep switching to the Fill Tool to keep adjusting the tolerance. I don't see what the value is of using Sample and Fill instead of just the Fill tool.LeviFiction wrote: ↑Thu Jan 27, 2022 7:24 pm JoeB - What are your fill tool settings? Is match mode set to None?

Re: Problem with the Sample and Fill tool
Depends on what you're doing and which settings you'll change most often. I mean with the fill tool you just hold CTRL to get a temporary eye-dropper but if you want to take bigger sample sizes or change the color profile you have to set the eyedropper tool settings first. I didn't notice this problem at all because I always use the fill tool and hold CTRL to sample colors. But if someone samples colors in different ways more often than they change their fill settings it's handy to have the option to quickly sample and fill from the eye-dropper. It's just a different way of doing what was already possible. Especially after they added the different color profiles to the eyedropper.
