PSP 2020 won't update

Post by Diobolaris »

Hey guys,

I got PSP 2020 Ultimate via HumbleBundle last year and it works well, but it just won't update. Whenever I launch the program, I get greeted by
1.jpg
, which tells me that there is an update, so I click on "UPDATE NOW". Then a quick InstallShield Wizard progress bar appears and it seems like there are some files installed. After this
3.jpg
pops up, telling me that PSP is already running, which, I guess is true, since the updater is running, but the program is not open, i. e. the graphics editor program. The language is german btw, even though the language I set in the program is english, but sometimes PSP uses the systems language, which in my case is german. Alright, so I click on "OK" and
4.jpg
opens, telling me to accept the end user license agreement, which I do. Also, there is a typo in the bottom right – "Aktualisieren" (update) is written with only one A :D
So, now I expect a "real" progress bar, which appears for maybe half a second, and immediately
5.jpg
shows up, saying that the update had successfully been installed, which obviously is not true, since when I open up PSP again, I get greeted by the first window again, asking for an update.

How do I fix this? Is there a way to force PSP to update? If not, can I make PSP ignore updates, so I won't see the update window ever again?
(There is no difference between 32 bit and 64 bit. Both have this problem.)

Also, how can I make the programm start in complete workspace mode? It always resets to photography mode.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,
In the top Menubar, click on Help and About...
If you see 22.2.0.8 as the version number, you have the last version (I mean the last PSP 2020).

PS : An "update" means a new version and not a transformation of your current 2020 version into the latest 2022 version. As a regular customer, you can get the new 2022 version at an "update" (reduced) price instead of the full price.

Within PSP 2020, go to the Help menu. There is an item in the drop down menu which tells you if there is an update available. Try that. But PSP 2020 is now more than a couple of years old. So if you only installed it relatively recently, then as Jean-Luc has already suggested, you may already have installed the latest version.

Hi Jean-Luc,

thanks for answering me!

It appears that I have the latest version
1.jpg
but why would the update window pop up then? It even says that there is an update available for PSP 2020, which is my version. I'm not interested in an update for any other version, obviously, and I'm not interested in transforming PSP 2020 into PSP 2022.

Is this like an ad? I'm not interested in those either, which is why I disabled them, as you can see here
2.jpg
Well, I'm confused.

Hi Ken Berry,

here is how my help menu looks like
1.jpg
and when I click on "Check for Updates…" I get this window
2.jpg
which even tells me that there is an important (!) update waiting for my PSP.

Why can I not install it? And if I have the latest version, why is this screen poping up? How do I disable it?

And how do I set PSP to always start in complete workspace mode? God, those two things annoy me so much! I always have to close the fake update window and I always have to manually activate the complete workspace. Each and every time. Even when I safe my workspace, it just starts in photography mode.

I'm sorry -- I can't answer about why you receive these update messages when you have the latest version. All I can do is suggest you try also disabling that "Automatically download free updates" in the box you copied to Jean-Luc.

As for starting in the Complete workspace, what have you got in Preferences? In mine I go to Preferences > General Program Preferences > Tab. And there I select "Set Edit as default". That means it should open every time in the Complete workspace.

Hm, I already tried disabling "Automatically download free updates", but it doesn't change anything. The window still appears.

And I have set my preferences to Edit also, as you can see here
1.jpg
yet it always starts in photography mode :(

Have you tried resetting PSP? With it closed, hold down the Shift key as you click on the desktop icon to open PSP. You should normally be asked if you want to reset the program. Click OK. Make sure, though, if you have any customized workspace, that you save it/them before you do the reset. Otherwise it would be lost.

Ah, resetting helped me to start PSP in complete workspace mode! Thank you :)

Now I just need to get rid of the update message once and for all.
