Hi
Believe me I am no expert just a new comer but I had the same problem and last night I purchased a 1394 (firewire?) cable and captured using that instead of the USB and only then could I selected DV. The quality was way better except I have a small problem with lines that others are helping me to sort out.
Just a thought.

It is important to point out that many (most?) digital camcorders include a USB 1.0 connector, which can not handle reasonable quality video bandwidth. These must capture via the firewire connection.
Those that have a USB2.0 connector can capture high quality video to ANY format. Moreover, many analog capture devices use USB 2.0 and users should not be discouraged from using this type of connection for capture.
