Installing Plugins & Scripts in New Version of PSP

Post by divine_si »

An easy import to bring in my plugins and scripts from previous versions instead of having to reinstall and move them manually.

File > Preferences > File Locations have had this for ages. There is a list of File Types which include Plug-ins and Scripts (Trusted) and Scripts (Restricted). Select one of these and then use the Add button to browse to where your plug-in or script is located to add them to your new version of PSP...

When you have an issue with PSP, your first stop should be to post that issue in the main forum to see if anyone can tell you how to solve it (as Ken has provided the answer to you here). Only then, if others have indicated that your issue cannot be accomplished with the existing PSP, should you be asking for it to be added to the next version.

I've moved this from the Wish List topic as a discussion has ensued.

In addition to what Ken has already stated, you can go to File - Import - Content From Previous Versions

Copy & Paste from the Help files:

Importing content and plugins from previous versions
You can import content that you’ve saved to the default locations for the last three versions of PaintShop Pro. For example, you can migrate plugins, scripts, brush tips, color palettes, gradients, patterns, textures, and effects that you've previously installed.
PSPX9 | PSP2020 | PSP2021| PSP2022 | PSP2023 & PhotoMirage installed; PSPX | PSPX2 thru PSP2019 owned but not installed

You are missing the entire point. You are still required to MANUALLY re-add all those location. I'm asking (wishing) for an automatic import where you can simply press a button and it will import all the locations that have been defined in your previous version. Your solution of "BROWSE TO WHERE YOUR PLUG-IN OR SCRIPT IS LOCATED" is not an auto-import. And Lord forbid if you forget where one of your plug-ins or brushes, etc is located.

So before you talk down to someone and suggest them the read or learn the app, how about you actually read what is being requested.

PS. I've been using PSP since it's before Corel bought it from JASC, so I am fully aware of how to import my scripts, plug-ins, and what not. I just HATE having to MANUALLY do it every single time that I upgrade when it would be easy to make this an automatic feature.

Well then, since we are not mind readers and don't know anything about your background with PSP, it would perhaps have been more useful if you had stated at the outset that you were already familiar with the other ways of achieving your end, but you were after something totally automatic... Your reference to reinstalling and moving manually suggested this was all you knew.

Exactly, Ken! The OP did NOT say he/she was looking for a one-click auto method of accessing previously installed scripts and plugin. They specifically referred to having to reinstall them then move them manually. So your previous answer was spot on in that it pointed out that no reinstalling was required, and no "moving" is required, simply redirecting within PSP. And, in fact, the OP's reference to having to "reinstall" is pretty good evidence that they did not know of a method that didn't include reinstalling despite what they said in a later reply. It appears it's the OP who was unable to read their own post accurately to understand what they actually said. And Kathy has also pointed out another option.

That said, I may be recalling this incorrectly but didn't @Levifiction have a script that imported various settings? If so, I can't remember if it also imported previous settings for file locations so stand to be corrected if it doesn't do that.

I'm not sure if any of you have ever upgraded any other piece of software in your life, but on almost every piece that I have ever upgraded, I'm asked if I want to import previous settings. For PSP to not have that option really is backwards.

But you are right, my terminology was a little inaccurate. Asking for an "easy" way to do it should have been clarified as an automatic way to do. But certainly having to manually add every directory ever used (and thus not being able to uninstall previous versions of the program if you are pointing to anything in those directories) certainly doesn't count as an "easy" way to do it either.

Kathy_9 did point out that recent versions of PSP do include an auto-import for importing items from previous versions.

I have several scripts for backup and restore. They are technically meant for backing up and restoring data between the same version of the software. In case you need to do a factory reset or move to a new computer. Most settings can be restored just fine between versions. But I recommend caution when doing so.
