Very interesting. Your mention of the Amazon reminded me that I had used a Sony analogue video camera on my two trips to the Amazon in the late 1980s. (I lived in Brazil for three and a half years between 1986 and 1989.) I had bought the camera on my first trip to New York in 1982. I also used it on various other trips, including one to Turkey where I used it on visits to the fantastic ancient ruins scattered around the country, and on a voyage on a concrete boat! But apart from swimming in a tributary of the Amazon which also had piranhas in it, I had no other dangerous adventures unlike your father!!

That's Awesome Ken. I love the Amazon. I only wish I had the video equipment that I have today back then. So much amazing footage I captured, that is garbage by today's standards. I no longer have the health to go back there and do that. I had Covid last year and came very close to dying. It seems my health just won't rebound after that. I still dream of going back. Maybe one day. At least I hope.

Yes, I fully understand that. I'd also love to go back to Brazil generally and the Amazon specifically with my current equipment -- even a smartphone would give me all the quality I need. My two trips to the Amazon were particularly memorable, one in dry season and one in the wet. Just imagine the floating buildings in the Manaus area go up 14 metres between dry and wet seasons! And I saw the pink dolphins and even rescued a sloth!!

That is so cool. The last time I was there was 2006. I had a Sony Mavica CD-500. I went with this camera at the time, because flash memory cards were insanely expensive at the time ($100 for 32 MB) but this camera recorded to mini-CDs which could hold 200MB and cost only $2 a piece. It was cumbersome to use, but provided almost unlimited recording ability without having to empty the card. I captured some great photos with it, but it was not good for video. Digital video was just not there at the time. One of the pictures I captured with that camera is pretty famous and has been used in publications all around the world.

But my most prized picture from the Amazon is this one. For many years, it was the only picture of the kind of this insect. Harvard University personally requested the use of it in one of its publications.

Wonderful photo of the insect... Can't say I ever saw one equivalent to that.

As for the piranha, yes, I got to know them well. Oddly enough, they taste quite sweet. After our adventure swimming to get clean on the first trip, we went fishing for piranha a few hundred meters from where we had been swimming. Caught a few and had a seafood (or riverfood!) stew that night. The piranha tasted quite good... On my second trip during flood season, my main memory is being in a canoe by myself, rowing around the tops of flooded trees, when a spider monkey jumped in with me. He ignored me totally, and spent the time looking for insects along the sides of the canoe. When he finally gave up, he just jumped into a passing tree!!

That must have been amazing. I have eaten lots of piranhas, and some spider monkeys to boot. They are preferred by native Amazon tribes which were the guides I used on my excursions out into the rainforest. Many people get all weirded out when I tell them that I have eaten piranhas, but as you said, they are delicious. In fact, pretty much any fish in the Amazon taste better than any freshwater fish in the USA. At least in my opinion. Spider Monkey, on the other hand, takes some getting used to. I know it sounds weird to talk about it, but this is just daily life for Amazonians. They don't see eating monkeys any different than Americans would think of eating a steak. My father always taught me to respect other cultures and to eat what was put before me. It has not always been easy to follow that advice. Have you ever eaten Muktuk (fermented whale blubber)? That one is hard. Let me tell you.

It was always a dream of mine to return to the Amazon with a film crew and capture the culture of the Amazon tribes before it is lost forever. I see so many documentaries, but they always seemed to be more interested in pushing the narrative of the producers rather than capturing the raw truth of the Amazonian culture. When I started my YouTube channel (the jungle explorer), my intention was to grow it to the point where it would finance such a venture. Initially, it seemed like this goal was attainable, but in the last year, everything has turned around. I am not giving up though.

To overcome audio issues I could connect the audio cable directly to the main board audio-in rather than using the usb connection.
So the usb device captured video with audio directly from vhs to the sound card.
Of course we have to set the audio source as line-in not usb.
Just a follow-up. I got my RCA to Audio jack splitter in and ran a test last night and it did not solve the audio out-of-sync problem. I think it made it worse. I have seen some suggestions online that suggest that it is not possible to correct it using a capture device. The suggestion is that the best way is to get a VHS/DVD-RW combo player and record the VHS directly to DVD. I actually have one of those and have done this successfully in the past, but the VHS player long ago started eating tapes. If I can find someplace to repair it, I will break it out of the mothballs and do it that way.

Do you have any further suggestions?
