I wasted hours trying to convert a 49 minute mpeg4 that has been lightly trimmed into a file that I could upload to dailymotion, which has a file size limit (as well as a 1 hr time limit for my status).
The file size blows up to a crazy size with this profile on MPEG-4, as high as 2.7GB:
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1280 x 720, 30 fps
Frame-based
H.264 Main Profile Video: 10000 Kbps
48000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 192 Kbps
I have no idea how to stop that. I had to resort to VSDC to do the editing, where the resultant file size was 119K. The original 90ish minute long file was 408K. What am I doing wrong?
ridiculous file size

Re: ridiculous file size
I'm sorry, I don't understand. I'm new to this, and I don't know what you're talking about. One editor was able to take a trimmed video and save in the same format at a much smaller file size. What do I actually have to DO to keep the file size from being stupid?

Welcome to the forums
Can you give more information as to your video files properties
Please right click the clip on the timeline and choose properties, what are they?
You can create an image of that panel and attach to your post.
First your video sizes of 408Kb for a 90 minutes video is extremely small.
Mpeg4 uses various compression settings, the example you gave at 10000Kbps is typical for a YouTube video, probably lowish quality at that.
Go to Share – Mpeg4- hit the + symbol – Choose the compression tab
This shows the compressions available, lowest quality and file size at the top with H.264 Main being the best option and indeed the default option. (as your details)
I suspect your video will be using one of the other options. We have also to consider the frame size which will affect the files size.
Ok
With your video on the top timeline as the first clip, go to Share
Top left of the options is Same as Project Settings, a little greyed out, but put a tick in the box, now change the option to Same as First Video Clip.
If that option is available then the render should produce a comparable size to the original.
So a little more info required, please
So stupid sizes....
a standard DVD would be 4.3 Gb for one hour
a Bluray would use at least 8Gb
Then if we explore 4K sizes we can easily double those sizes
