Video Studio 2021 fails to run

Post by Martin H »

Appologies if I should have started another thread for this. You may recall that I previously had problems with VS2020 Ult hanging due to my having installed multiple new blue effects.

In July I purchased a new PC and installed a copy of VS ULT 2021. I did not install the Newblue collections that had previously caused problems on my other desktop PC. All has been working well until yesterday when I discovered that VS would crash immediately after the splash screen.

The first thing I did was reset the library. It then seemed to load but when I clicked on the home / edit / share tabs it immediately crashed.

I then went to settings, apps & features, uninstall and tried a repair which didn't fix the problem.

After that I uninstalled VS ULT via the above process and reinstalled the software. The problem persisted.

In desperation I downloaded and ran the cleanup tool and did a fresh install of VS. It will still not advance past the splash screen.

I am wondering if I should have first uninstalled VS through settings and then used the cleanup tool to just to clear up any residue?

Martin
I have moved your post to the Video Studio main forum where it should receive a better response

Try resetting the program by renaming the 24.0 folder to 24.0_old
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro (x64)\24.0

This folder does not get removed when running the cleanup tool.

Hmmmm
I would use the clean-up tool to remove video studio
Delete the 24.0 folder as that is not removed by clean-up

Download the installation files again choosing a new empty download folder, this will give you the latest installation files
Then try installing using the new files

I've just followed your instructions and VS then seemed to load but when I clicked on the home / edit / share tabs it immediately crashed. Anything else you can suggest or should I reach for the 5lb hammer!!!

Well it did get a little further, I thought it only got as far as the splash screen, but reading the original post seems to have been updated?
Does it crash every time?
You mentioned a new PC, is that Windows 10

Yes Trevor. It crashes just after the splash screen every time I try to load it. If I reset the library it gets past the splash screen but when I click on the home / edit / share tabs it immediately crashes.

Here's a little more information.

Windows 10 Pro, 21H1, OS Build 19043.1288, Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.3920.0 - installed on 7th July 2021.

Checking update & restore reveals that the last cumulative update was installed on 15th October, 2021.

The only other software I have recently installed

1) On 21 September I installed NewBlue Titler Pro 7 with no issues. Just in case there could have been a conflict I have just uninstalled it. This has made no difference.

2) On 20 October I added a Logitech MX Master 3 mouse together with its' Options software. I even managed to configure the gesture button to open VS ULT. I doubt this is causing the issue.

I'm completely stumped.

Martin
We mentioned renaming or removing the 24.0 folder.
There are several folders with that name, just to make sure we are referring to the folder within the roaming folder structure which is used to reset the program.

C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro (x64)\24.0

Some info to reset program

Martin,
If CVS has been working for months, and then stopped working several days ago, then I doubt the issue is with the editor software, and is more likely something that happened on your PC several days ago. For example, on 3 Nov (my time) windows updated (see KB5006365) the .NET framework, which CVS makes extensive use of. Many Pc's have auto update selected, so you may not have been aware that the update was happening.
So, suggestion;
- check your update history to see if that KB has been installed
- if it has, reverse it out (locate the uninstall updates link, select it, locate the KB rt click it and choose uninstall) and then
- check to see what CVS does on your machine.

Hi David,
Thanks for coming back to me.
The last two updates installed on my Ryzen 9 PC were listed as KB5006670 installed on 15th Oct and the previous one was KB4023057 on 24th September. The VS crashing issue started on 2nd November. I have another desktop PC that shows identical windows updates and there are no other updates pending. As I was also getting the 'This PC doesn't currently meet the minimum system requirements to run Windows 11" message I backed up all my data and took it to my local PC engineer yesterday evening. I've asked him to enable TPM2 in the bios settings, for a future win 11 update, and to do a clean install of Windows 10. I've no idea why KB5006365 doesn't show up. Perhaps it's a regional thing.

Viewing my update history showed the Quality Update list, there was also another list as Other Updates, here I found KB5006365 as installed on 4th Nov

I've checked the 'other updates' and KB5006365 wasn't listed. The last one under this heading was KB5006738 on 31 October. I checked for updates again and KB5006365 then downloaded.
There were security intelligence updates on 1st, 2nd and 3rd November but surely these should have no impact on VS ULT.

As a reminder the PC I'm now checking this info on is my second desktop pc with a Ryzen 5 2600 processor and VS2020 ULT. VS still loads as usual. My Ryzen 9 PC should be back on Monday and I will have to reinstall all my editing software as it is having a clean install of Win10.

If windows updates has the potential the stop VS loading should I consider unplugging the internet connection from the Ryzen 9 machine as soon as I get the software re-installed?

Windows updates affects what is on the PC, not the internet. The net is just the means of delivery.
Windows updates normally are available from the2nd tuesday of the month, and sometimes between those dates. The intelligence updates are for windows Defender, and happen pretty much every day: in that respect Defender is much better than the commercial AV packages you pay money for.

Since you can't find any recent windows updates, was there an event on your PC at (or just before) CVS began its strike that may have corrupted a program - like an unplanned power failure?

On 31st October the lights just flickered on and off in the evening. Unfortunately, I can't recall what programs were running at the time. I didn't re-boot that PC until the 2nd November which was when I first noticed that VS failed to run.

From Leeds Yorkshire
Sometime earlier this week maybe Wednesday 5 pm ish our lights also flickered about 5 minutes, at first I thought one of the lamps failing.
Unusual for our power to fail as it is very stable. Did not cause any problems and did have the PC running. Maybe they were still working on the Grid????

Martin can you confirm the use reset folder , as this post
https://forum.corel.com/viewtopic.php?p=390302#p390302

one folder is here………..
