Line left side of ISO file when played via VLC

Post by cdoughertycd »

When I burn an ISO file to use later for DVD burns, I am getting a line down the left side when I play it, but this line does not show in the MP4 I'm using to make the ISO. I'm using VLC to play the ISO file. Any help appreciated.

More info please . .
A snapshot/screenshot of the line when played in VLC.
version number of VLC
Is the mp4 file the only one in the disk composition, or just the only one (of presumably several) that shows the line?

Hi David - Disk composition is only one MP4 file. I did make a menu for one click to play that has an image from my file of photos.

This line does not appear in the stand-alone MP4 file. It is more noticeable on the burned ISO and DVD burn in clips that are smaller than the frame size of which I have several.

Attached is a screen shot of the very beginning of the ISO and a DVD burn. I did a separate DVD burn of the MP4, not using the ISO to see if it was an ISO problem but happens also on the separate MP4 burn.

Thanks for your help. I've burned 22 DVDs of this project with the line in out of desperation but will reburn them if we can figure it out. I've fiddled with clip margins on the video timeline and also "fit to project" size, those choices but that didn't help in terms of burn to ISO or burn directly from the MP4, again MP4 plays fine.

Are the original video files 4 / 3 ratio or 16 / 9 if the latter then the video contains the black boarders.
A DVD disc has to use mpeg2 video files, so your mp4 will be converted to mpeg 2 I suspect as 16 / 9 irrespective of the original ratio. A process called convert title prior to burning the disc.
You may be best to convert the original mp4 project to mpeg2 then use that video to burn the disc.
Take note of the lines when converting the videos

Thanks Trevor: I'll create an MPEG 2 and will see if that causes the left margin line. Yes, the video is 16:9 format. I'll let you know.

Trevor: Attached is section of left side at 16:9 after render to MPEG-2, so I'm thinking it is something to do with the MPEG-2. Again the render to MP4 is ok. If you zoom in on the attachment, you can see the little teeth of the line. Sorry the line is hard to see on the jpeg.

I seem to recall that in the "old" DVD days (!!), those lines were quite common. I'm not sure what caused them and they were very common, but no one worried about them because when the DVD was played, it was usually on an old cathode ray TV and the line would be off-screen. TV screens in those days used to cut off a small proportion of a video all round. The yellow rectangular line that used to appear in earlier versions of VS indicated that cut-off portion to indicate the "usable" part of the screen. The problem these days, of course, is that flat screen TVs now show everything...

Hi Ken: Thanks for your info. I told my client I'd prefer just to share the MP4 file via Dropbox and not make DVDs but she said some people still want the DVDs. Oh well - I'll go ahead and burn them with the MPEG-2 file. If I do any more video jobs I think I'm going to people shared MP4 only.

Thanks again,

Yep, DVD's are still popular - with those that are not as tech savvy as our kids, or just what they are used to. A student I once had (5 years ago) used them for her parents, because in florida a) DVD's were the norm, and b) broadband there was non-existent, so suggesting something like dropbox or one drive was a waste of breath.

However, if your DVD content is just one file (mp4/mp2) and you still want to use a menu, use chapter points in the file at the locations where a topic or subject change occurs and you want to 'menu' that location.

You didn't post the file properties . . if Trevor's suggestion isn't effective, look at the data and frame rates of the source video. I once encountered a video (from a camcorder) that had a data rate close to 200Kbps and it produced a green line across the bottom of the preview screen. Reducing that to something more normal - say 50-60kbps for HD - and the green line went away. A more knowlegeable contributor was of the opinion that the data rate was so high that VS was trying to display it in the flyback parts of the screen image.

Thanks David:

The data rate of the MPEG-2 file is 8000 kbps.
Frame rate is 29.97 per sec.
I've produced a ton of video projects before and never touched data rate, always shot at 29.97 per sec. Hmm, interesting.

I want the DVD viewer to be able to click a play arrow to have it start rather than have it start automatically when inserted. I figured a menu was the only way to do that, right?

Updated . .
My data was for the original video ex camcorder, not the rendered resukt.
Re using a menu: yes, but not the only way. I assume that when your viewer starts the DVD he/she is already "watching".
A menu allows them to start at their convenience, and also allows you to add an intro file at the start of the composition: like the movie production logos, but of your own making (a promo for what you do?), and it plays only once before the menu appears.
Making a menu, ensure you select the type of menu play (once started, play to the end, or when a menu item is finished playing return the menu for the next selection). see screenshot here:

Yes, I burn always so they can click play at their convenience and I make it return to the menu at the end.

On the left line issue, I only get that when rendered as MPEG-2, MP4 is fine, does not have the line, hmmm.

You do not give any property details of your video file nor the new Mpeg2
Can you right click the Mp4 for properties what are they? Post a screen shot -- It is possible the frame is progressive.
Right click the Mpeg2, again properties, what are they? Post a screen shot.
You should retain the same frame type as MP4, if they are Interlaced that may be the issue.
Unfortunately the program may default in using interlacing, if so you can create your own Mpeg2 profile to use progressive.

Post updated
Just ran a quick test to render mpeg4 to Mpeg2 and do get a line down the left hand side of the frame.
The line would be on the very edge of the video and not noticeable when viewing the full frame, however if the frame is reduced to create a Picture in Picture effect then the line shows.
Confused and have not found a fix as yet……

Hi Trevor, thanks so much for trying to figure this out. I read your "post updated" but here are my latest MP2 and MP4 properties anyway. I've never had this issue before. The MP2 was rendered from the VS project and not an MP4.

Trevor: I just got this from Corel Support, I had contacted them on Friday. Here's what they tell me to do. I'll try it but I'm wondering if I'll have to relink everything and then will it be in precise sync. I should probably write down what every photo is as I don't think the black & white relink clip says what they are. I'll ask them.

Mr. / Ms. ,

Thank you for contacting Corel Customer Support Services. My name is Vidhya and I have been assigned to your ticket.

I do apologize for the inconvenience happened to you. Let me help you to fix the issue as quick as possible.
