VS 2020 Ultimate Crash on Startup!

Post by Ronin-X »

First, I'd like to apologize if this issue has already been covered in a post on the forum. The search function doesn't like me! It consistently tells me I can't search at this time, and I should wait x number of seconds. I simply don't have time to read every post related to crashing that has been posted so far! I hope this is understandable! So, onto the issue...

I installed Video Studio 2020 Ultimate yesterday and upon loading, once the workspace window appeared it crashed. The loading screen remains active but the application itself just won't load. I've tried a few times to see if this was a consistent issue or a one off and yeah, I can't get into the application. Has anyone else experienced this and if so, have they discovered a solution?

Thanks
Brian

Are you saying the the splash screen just hangs, then eventually disappears, or you need task manager to end the process.

Having just installed VS2018 on a new desktop, had the same issue, VS would not proceed beyond the splash screen, uninstall and re-installation did not solve the problem.
What I had to do was run the VS2018 Cleanup tool, this removed everything related to VS2018, installed again and the program opens correctly
You can download the cleanup tool for VS2020 from https://forum.corel.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=59847

The Splash screen hangs but eventually disappears without intervention.

I tried this using the VS2020 cleanup tool, and nothing has changed! It's still proving to be nothing more than a digital paperweight.

You should have on your computer the VS2020 folder containing the installation files
Uninstall VS2020 and use the cleanup tool
Now, run VideoStudio_Install.exe and select Custom Install, only install the main program, deselect the other folders
Now try to open the program, if it opens then install the other folders one at a time, hopefully you will locate which folder is causing the launch problem, then we can advise further

First when the program fails to launch go to Device Manager to see if the program is showing in the background list, if so End Task, then try running again.

OK
There was a problem using 2018 and 2019, not sure if this also affected 2020 but you can try the hot fix.

Checked this earlier, once the splash screen has disappeared the application is no longer running.

Nope! It gave me an error message after applying the hotfix. so not meant for 2020... I'm tempted to reinstall my old copy of Cyberlink Power Director. I was hoping to use VS but I'm beginning to think I wasted my money buying it. It's been a year and still no solution. It's done this since I bought it. I've yet to be able to get it running. I'm certainly not paying for the next version in hopes that version won't do this to me as someone suggested as a solution in another thread.

Brian, if you have had an installation problem for a year, why only now do you ask for help from forum members. Have you, at any time, contacted Corel Technical Support for advice, also, did you purchase from Corel or a 3rd party vendor.
Are you still using the original downloaded installation files, if so rename the installation folder and download a fresh copy of the entire package, just in case your original downloaded files are corrupt, which appears to be the only reason that with only the main program installed it still fails to launch. Do you have any other NLEs installed, containing New Blue/Boris/proDAD/ all of which have caused installation issues in the past, especially New Blue where only one version of Titler Pro can be installed, with VS it is NB Titler pro 5
If your installation files are OK, then you could try installing in Safe Mode, not something I have ever tried, nor should ever be necessary, but up to you

Simple, too busy to deal with it at the time. I purchased it as part of the Photo/Video bundle through Corel directly. it wasn't a work-related purchase, so I just uninstalled it figuring I'd deal with it when I had the time. I completely forgot about it until recently when I reinstalled PSP 2021 and noticed it sitting in the same folder.

I'm setting up a YouTube/Streaming Studio and decided to us it over PowerDirector 16 which is 4 versions from the current edition 20 and not eligible for upgrade pricing. Not to mention Cyberlink has gone to a subscription model which I despise. Anyway, I now have a use for it and I figured by now there should be a documented fix for the problem, boy I was wrong. 18,19 and 21 all have documented fix's. 20 seems to have fallen through the cracks.
RobertOZ wrote: Tue Oct 05, 2021 8:43 pm Have you, at any time, contacted Corel Technical Support for advice...
Yes I contacted them first! They just got back to me today with something to try... a Windows clean boot... not safe boot... clean boot. I never heard of this before today!

RobertOZ wrote: Tue Oct 05, 2021 8:43 pmAre you still using the original downloaded installation files...
Not to my knowledge! The VS2020 Cleanup app seems to have eradicated the original files as it redownloaded everything again.

Yeah all 3 of the ones you mentioned. I uninstalled them all but it is still crashing. I'm going to try doing another cleanup, rebooting and doing a fresh Main Installation. If that doesn't work then I'm going to go the tedious route of doing a clean boot.

If a clean reboot works, the tedious part is reactivating each program one at a time until you find the culprit that is causing the issue, I have used a clean reboot many times, normally works, and does not affect any thing else on the PC
The cleanup tool would not normally remove your installation folder, to be honest, don't know how that would be possible, that folder is not part of the program, so please check that a fresh copy has been downloaded

Ok deleted folder and did a fresh install. That didn't work! Disabled all non-Microsoft services and disabled all start up apps and rebooted... That didn't work... The only thing I can think of to try now is a fresh install of Windows 10.

Brian,
Jez, you do have issues, unfortunately our forum Guru, Lata (Trevor) is on holiday, on a cruise ship somewhere in the Mediterranean and won't be back for 3 weeks or so.
In the meantime, can only suggest that you contact Corel Support again, explaining everything you have done to date and ask them to Escalate the issue.
I think what you need is a Corel Development Engineer to access your computer to help locate the problem, there is a conflict somewhere and it should be fixable.
Do other programs and other NLEs install OK, if so cant see a reason to reinstall the OS

That is an understatement! Despite swearing I wouldn't do it, I bit the bullet and bought 2021. I should've listened to my original gut feeling, 2021 is doing the exact same thing to a "T."

I just received another email from support giving me a link to another online installer that doesn't say "Online" in the file name, but it is almost the same size as the other installer! Email support from Corel is slow. I get a response once every 24hrs or so if I'm lucky. Not so bad if I'm working but I'm at home self-isolating starting today. I'm going to be going stir crazy if I don't get this figured out soon.

Video Studio is the only application that does this on my system. PaintShop Pro 2021 Ultimate installed without any issues and works fine. All the other applications on my system work fine.

Brian,
Immediately apply for a refund, I believe you have 30 days, once received, uninstall VS2021,then download and install the TRIAL version
Your issue needs escalating, keep pushing Tech Support, there is a conflict somewhere, and the fact that you have PSP installed indicates that VS should also install.

Just a thought, disconnect from the internet, then launch VS, it's possible that with the internet connected it's looking for something it can't find
