Corel pop-up ads can't be stopped :)

Post by tletter »

Corel is throwing up pop-up ads that can't be stopped. A week ago, I clicked the "Do not display this message again" option on their Painter ad, however, the ad just keeps popping up. The only change to the annoying ad is that when it pops up, the "Do not display this message again" option shows up as selected (see fol image). Obviously, for Corel, the "Do not display this message again" option is a placebo option :(

Killing CUH.EXE will end the pop-ups but probably ends auto-updates as well. Does CUH.EXE have any other purpose, other than throwing up pop-up ads?

Even worse for me as the popup is blank (white) and it freezes the screen - can't close the popup, have to End Task via Task Manager.

Grrr!!

This has reminded me to go to C:\Users\[YourName]\AppData\Roaming\Corel\Messages and delete the folders there. It doesn't stop the ads completely, but at least reduces them fairly significantly. That sub-folder currently contains only two further folders of ads. Quite often I find 8 or more folders. Moreover, the two folders are dated late August, which was about when I last looked to see what had accumulated. So not much. I seem only to get ads now once or twice a week, and oddly enough also usually from Painter...

I also check in C:\ProgramData\Corel\Messages, but that one has been empty for more than a month now. I've never found out what causes ads to creep in there, though they occasionally do.

For Windows Vista, 7, 8 and 10 users:

Hold down the Windows and R keys on the keyboard simultaneously
When the Run box appears, release both keys
Type: appdata in the Run text box
Click OK
Double click on the Roaming folder to open it
Double click on the Corel Folder
Highlight the Messages folder and press Delete on your keyboard

rwernyei -- I already suggested that above (C:\Users\[YourName]\AppData\Roaming\Corel\Messages). It works for a while, but gradually fills up again, probably related to the number of Corel programs you have, plus the number of times you open them.

I know Ken but I think my directions were easier to follow with keyboard shortcuts.
This is a last resort by creating a dummy file.

1. Go to this folder: C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Corel

2. In this user Corel folder, you will see a folder called Messages. Select and delete it.

3. To prevent the folder from being recreated, create an empty file with the same name -- not a folder, but a file. To do that, create a text file in the appdata Corel folder, right-click choose New>Text document from the context menu, and name the file Messages.

4. Once the text file is created, remove the .txt extension. Do that by renaming it, and deleting the extension .txt. You are simply creating an empty file called Messages. You will get a warning about the file not be usable, but that's okay.

Now when Corel tries to populate new ads it can't because of the broken file path.

I don't want to kill the messages completely, rather I don't want ads to continuously pop-up despite the "Do not display this message again" option being selected. The fix to this issue rests with Corel, and presumably it's in their interest to fix it before people adopt an approach like yours that'll kill all Corel messages.

rwernyei -- thanks, I hadn't tried that specific method... I'll try it, though, and report back.

I have just purchased and started using Video Studio and have this exact same problem. Only Task Manager will get rid of the blank white pop-up. I have tried all the obvious suggestions outlined above - ad disappears for a while but eventually comes back.

I have asked for help from Corel but not holding out much hope!

No help from Corel - just repeated what I had already tried! However, I have had no repetition of the problem since I deleted the Corel entires in Windows Task Scheduler. I am wondering if doing this will have stopped the automatic check for updates. Not a big issue if it has, it just means checking via the program periodically.

my biggest issue w/ Corel products and it's a never ending thing. SPAM after SPAM. I had a ticket open recently to fix this. I've been a customer for many years, and this happens every time a "new thing" comes out. And YES, I've checked that I my accounts (two) both have communication preference set to NO MESSAGES. This does no good. Customer support's response is usually the "did you click the I DONT WANT TO SEE THIS option?" AND yes over and over and over. Annoying especially that I'm not even using COREL products right now; I haven't been in ANY Corel product in months.
