Please help with grainy images!!

I need help!!!! I put my photos in my scanner and when they come up I have to crop them to make them full screen. When I run them with slideshow they come up grainy and I get an X telling me they are not the right target display size of the slideshow album. it says I need to make the necessary adjustments but I cant find out how. Please someone help me with this. Im trying to do a slideshow for our church. Thanks so much. You can email me at peachy67@insightbb.com Thanks!!!!!! Try adjusting your resolution to a lower resolution in pixels. Try scanning them at a lower resolution or use an image editor to save it to lower resolution. You may use jpeg compression for lower size and try optimizing photos for it not to look grainy. Try to look for a good image editing program.

This may not apply, but just in case...

In Adobe Photoshop Elements, you are able to set the dimensions/size for what you will be cropping. If you have the ability to set the size for the cropped image, then make sure that it matches the final size that you want, and that it is smaller then the size of the original image.
