Cropping images in Ultimate 2021

Post by Irishrose »

I am using VideoStudio Ultimate 2021 and am having issues using the cropping tool feature. When I crop an image I am left with a dotted line showing where the original edge of the image was. Example: I've inserted an image onto an overlay track and decided to crop a portion away. With the crop mode selected I moved the orange bars removing the unwanted portion of the image. The crop does remove this portion of the image however it leaves a dotted line where the original edge of the image was. In other words I'm left with the cropped image and a dotted line floating off to the side.

I've tried using photo editing software and have the same problem. An example of this would be cropping a cameo from a photograph to insert into the VideoStudio project. These images are saved as png files. When inserted onto an overlay track the same dotted line occurs.

Any ideas what is causing this and how to correct the issue?

Once the Crop tool or Scale tool has been selected it remains so, deselect it

Hi Trevor,

I should have said that I did revert back to the 'resize' mode and turned off the 'crop' tool. Here is an example of what I'm referring to. This is a jpeg image. You can see that the setting is in resize mode but there is a dotted line off to the right where the original edge of the image is. I created a short video as an mpeg-4 just to see if the dotted line was a ghost, but it shows in the finished video.
Thank you for your help with this.

Thanks now i understand

If you do the same using a video clip, does that show the same edge

Post Updated
I have just tried cropping a jpeg and png image and do not see the line showing the original border.

Can you share your image, is is somehow different to any I have used?

As Trevor, when I tried this the dotted line edge of the original was not evident in the project mode. In clip, it was.
But frankly, a better way of cropping an image or a video is to use the cropping filter (Fx, cropping): deselect background colour and you have much more flexibility in what to crop, use of keyframes and choice of different sizes by percentage, vertical vs horizontal: and no dotted lines in the end result.

David, I do not see the dotted line in either clip or project mode

Which image did you use, I tried a few from the library BG-Marble seemed a good option being white was best to show the dotted lines
Tried both jpeg and png, no problems

Trevor,
2 images attached - croppped image in both clip and project mode.
Clip mode image has the dotted edge, altho as I think about it that's not the original edge, but the cropped edge. mea culpa. Note here that the preview screen has slipped back to the default setting, not custom #1 that was set, this in 1st VS session after a cold start.
Project mode of the same cropped image. set back to custom #1 layout for this shot.

Interesting. Could not get that image larger by clicking on it - just did not work. But I also tried the same thing as prior using the Fx cropping filter on a .png image - same result.
My tests were done with images in the TL, but the same result when they are in the overlay track - which is irish rose' screenshot. The dotted line on the image from irish rose reminds me of the cropping limits in the filter. Is the original of that irish rose image available?

I have asked Irishrose to provide her image but no reply since then, it may be the way the image has been saved especially if a png having transparency

long time ago, I recall this dotted line being seen on other crop tools, applying a little feather seemed to clear that, I think, as i said a long time ago.

Trevor and David,

Thank you for helping to figure out what the issue with cropping is.

After reading your responses I tried various ways of cropping an image as well as a video clip. I have no trouble cropping a video clip either entered on the video or overlay track. I was able to crop a jpeg image on both tracks, however, it was inconsistent. Some times the dotted line would show and others it did not. When the dotted line occurs it shows in both clip and project modes. I have not used fx-cropping but will look into it.

Being able to crop within VideoStudio is a great advantage and a time-saver. Up to this point I have needed to do specific cropping and alterations in a photo editing software program, save the work, and then insert the finished image into VideoStudio. Being able to do some basic cropping within VideoStudio will be a welcome tool.

Here is the image I worked with today as well as cropped images - unsuccessful and successful.

Frankly, if I need cropping in a photo or video clip (eg, to remove something unwanted anywhere in the clip - such as a person straying into the recording field, a sun flare et al) I use the Fx cropping filter in combination with clip keyframes within the filter and clip cuts.
