help with grainy images

I need help!!!! I put my photos in my scanner and when they come up I have to crop them to make them full screen. When I run them with slideshow they come up grainy and I get an X telling me they are not the right target display size of the slideshow album. it says I need to make the necessary adjustments but I cant find out how. A bit of detail may also entice someone to reply too. What size are the photos you scanned? color/BW? which scanner and settings? scanning resolution? etc.
