PaintShop Pro 2022 cannot open WebP

Post by Zeitreisender »

I tried opening WebP files in PSP 2022. Unfortunately that does not work. Is the problem known?

In paint.net I can open, edit and save this format without any problems.

Webp images are supported for both reading and writing according to PSP's file format support page in their help documents: https://help.corel.com/paintshop-pro/v2 ... rmats.html

I opened all of the images from here: https://developers.google.com/speed/webp/gallery1

And they worked just fine.

Thanks LeviFiction & Radim!

I found the following:

1. WebP files in "Lossless" and "Lossi" (with Alpha) format will not be opened in PSP 2022. (see: https://developers.google.com/speed/webp/gallery2)

2. If I save images with an alpha channel (e.g. PNG files in PSP 2022 as WebP, the alpha channel (transparency) in the image is automatically removed (as well as with JPG files).

3. I can only open WebP images without an alpha channel in PSP 2022 and save them again in exactly the same way.

This is how it works better: With paint.net I can open all WebP formats (Lossless and Lossi), edit them and save them again with the alpha channel. Paint.net also opens a settings dialog box before saving a WebP file. Working with all WebP files is very convenient here.

I hope that Corel will provide further options for the WebP format later, as it is already available in paint.net.

If PSP cannot open WEBP files the just say so and stop beating around the bush here. It is apparent that very few WEBP file will open and many be saved as jpg or whatever format you wish. So why is this a problem? This is a frequent complaint and no fix! Having to open them in another application and then hopefully being able to convert them before saving them to be used in PSP is just stupid ridiculous. There is obviously a situation that most WEBP file cannot be opened in any version of PSP with the usual error message. Frankly I don’t care why, I just want if corrected. This is supposed to be a professional image editing software application by a company such as Corel. Get it done!

Yes, one can use the decide and encode command line tools from Google to both convert a webp into a pmg and then back again after you're done with your edits.

FastStone Image Viewer is free, and it will convert webp to png, including transparency, for PSP 2022, with a "*" note: * "Note: HEIC and WEBP are supported by Windows Imaging Component (WIC) codecs on Windows 10 / 11"
However, it will not convert back to webp.

About the Note: Does that mean that FastStone will only convert all Webp formats to PNG if a person has Windows 10 or 11 because, for example, it actually needs the WIC codecs in those systems to do so?

I do not think so but I do not know. WIC codex has been around for a long time in Windows, but has it been updated for all versions? The change log on the FastStone page says for Version 7.1 (May 28, 2019), "Supports HEIC and WEBP formats on Windows 10".

The install file FSViewerSetup76.exe is 6.794 MB. Setup is reasonably fast, so it might be worthwhile just to install and try it. Before trying, it might be a good idea to turn off "Use Thumbnail Database" in Settings (F12), Thumbnail tab.

Just finished some scripts that will let you open and save WebP formats including those with Alpha Transparency - https://forum.corel.com/viewtopic.php?p=395066#p395066

While not perfect, what's nice about this option is you can do everything from within PSP. No need to go to an external program to convert them for you.
