Creating old picture look

Post by wlmpilot »

Attached is a picture of an ancestry of my girlfriend. Notice the lower section has the black layer. My girlfriend has another old picture of an ancestry that she wants to add that black look to it just as you see in this picture. As I type this, I wonder if it is as simple as selecting the black section on the attached picture and adding it to the other picture. Thoughts/Ideas?

Try with the Burn Brush (Hardness 0, Opacity 70 or lower):

I am just now getting around to editing the photo mentioned in my initial post. I created a raster laver, promoted the picture to background. When I try to use the burn brush on the raster layer, I get nothing. Do I have to use the burn brush on the picture itself?

Don't create a raster layer, and don't promote.
Duplicate the background layer and work on the duplicated layer.
The background layer will stay there as a security if you need to recover it.
