[BUG] Can't open SVG. Getting error "unable to open the file. Please verify that the file is valid"

Here is how to should appear (screenshot from Inkscape):

I've attached the file. Tried contacting customer support, but they simply replied with a list of supported file formats in PSP 2022 and didn't even recognize this as a bug!

I've given Corel QA a heads up. It's the weekend so you may not get an immediate response.
PSPX9 | PSP2020 | PSP2021| PSP2022 | PSP2023 & PhotoMirage installed; PSPX | PSPX2 thru PSP2019 owned but not installed

I got a response, but not the one I expected. As I said, they simply replied with a link to supported file formats which makes no sense!

Meanwhile, is there documentation with a list of PSD supported features in PSP?
Every time I open a PSD file, I get this error: this PSD contains unsupported features!

That is main support, they don't have a lot of technical information. Usually you need to push and hope they'll bump up the topic to the engineering team.

PSP's SVG import isn't great though, and not just because it seems to randomly reject files for seemingly no reason. Even if they fixed that I'm honestly not convinced it would be worth while. Will say this though, since they now include chromium for the new Photography workspace they have a great SVG renderer they could be making use of. My biggest issue is they convert the SVG to a raster and don't even give you the option to keep the paths.

As for PSD, that error usually shows up when they have layer effects on one of the layers. It's a warning that the end result might not match what you expect.

Usually PSP will fail silently on features it doesn't support. For example PSP doesn't have Linear Dodge (Add) blend mode, or the Subtract Blend mode, and it won't warn you about this, it'll just keep a blend mode of Normal. PSP doesn't support Text or vector paths/shapes from PSD files. But it will convert them to raster layers without batting an eye. No errors to warn you about it. If the image has a smart object, PSP keeps the flattened layer. It has a similar but separate error if you open a PSD file with an unsupported Adjustment Layer. But I most often see that error you mention when layer effects are involved. As they don't map cleanly to PSP's own layer effects.

Hi Malayail,

First of all, we are sorry that you encountered this file opening problem. Would you mind let us know how you create this SVG file? What software do you use? When we try to open this SVG file in 3rd party software, none of them can open the SVG file correctly. (Refer to the screenshot) We assume there is any specific info that we cannot decode in this SVG file.

Looking forward to your feedback.

Joseph Lin, they do demonstrate that it can be opened in Inkscape. And it can be opened in browsers just fine. Affinity Designer does in fact open it just fine. If you read the SVG file you'll see what I mean. First it defines 3 definitions for different resources, 1 gradient, 1 effects filter, and 1 path. The path is the circle. The circle path (b) is added first with the linear gradient. Then it's added a second time colored black, with the filter effect added. Finally it adds the hand path filled with white on top of the other two effects. Affinity Designer doesn't appear to apply the effect filter. You can see in the layer palette 3 curves, 2 circles (one with a gradient, and one just black) and the hand curve. So it's actually opening it just fine minus the effect that's supposed to be applied to the black circle.

I took that file and made a much simpler version. I'm including it in the zip file I'm uploading here. This one only includes the black circle and the thumb path. It doesn't use anything more advanced than that. PSP still didn't like it. I did open it in Affinity Designer and then exported it as an SVG. The new file "psptest.svg" does open in PSP but the paths are not round they are sharp lines.

While I can definitely understand PSP not properly rendering the filter effect, not being able to read the file at all and import a black circle and thumb doesn't make sense.

there are 22 specifications for SVG 1.1 and SVG 2 it could be that Paintshop pro and Photoshop have only SGV version 1.1 support.

Hi Joseph,
It's an icon designed by Facebook. So, I don't know which software they used.
It can be opened perfectly fine in Inkscape. And it can be opened in browsers and Affinity Designer without that shadow effect as user LeviFiction said.
The reason why it's showing as pixelated is that you opened it in Affinity Photo and not Designer.

Since you're the product manager, may I ask whether you've plans to implement full PSD support in PSP?
